Our 6th grade pointe students tried on pointe shoes for the first time this week! Next week they'll learn how to sew on ribbons and elastics before they begin their training.

Happy First Day of School! We are so glad to have students back in the building and to be kicking off the 2026-27 school year! Today our students received their dancewear and had orientation. Tomorrow, they dance!

If you are still musing about the music from Dionne Figgins' Echoes of the Studio, then you're in luck! George Lykogiannis' composition is now available to listen on all streaming services.

The collaboration that went into the creation of this album is truly remarkable—from months of George composing while Dionne choregraphed alongside, down to the cover art drawn by an alumni parent, Julia Kopelson. We are incredibly grateful to everyone involved in bringing this piece to life.

Happy last of August! Today we are featuring "Charmed Lives," Eliot Feld's ballet which premiered in 1990 with dancers Lynn Aaron, Darren Gibson, and Joan Tsao. This piece received a rave review in the New York Times upon its premiere, where it was described as, "not a conventional pas de trois...the dancers are seen as individuals, not as partners...they are not interchangeable but are distinctly different performers."

We are excited to announce that “Charmed Lives" will be restaged for Kids Dance 2027 at The Joyce Theater in June! Joan Tsao, former Feld Ballets company member and one of the premier cast dancers, will be staging this work on Ballet Tech alumni. If you're an alum who is 18 years or older, please keep a look out for an invitation to audition.

Happy ! This week we're featuring "23 Skidoo," a playful piece choreographed by Eliot Feld in 1994 for Kids Dance. The steps in this dance build upon themselves in overlapping complexity and interlocking components that require precision and careful ex*****on. As a staple of our Kids Dance repertory, "23 Skidoo" has been performed at the Joyce Theater in 1994, 1995, 1998 (featured here), and 2022.

Every Friday this August, we will post an archival clip from one of Eliot Feld's ballets. The first ballet is "Echo," which premiered in 1986 at The Joyce Theater. This clip from the premiere features Feld Ballet company member Cheryl Jones dancing to Steve Reich's enchanting music. In a New York Times review on the premiere, they describe "Echo" as "essentially a serpentine dance...The choreography is primarily concerned with rotation - of hands, wrists, head, flexed feet - and small steps executed in intricate releves, or rising up and down on toe."

“Echo” is one of 71 ballets of Feld’s in the public domain. Access to the full footage of this ballet for research or staging purposes is available by contacting Ballet Tech or by visiting the NYPL for the Performing Arts.

Construction is progressing rapidly here at 890 Broadway! Our new elementary wing is complete, the newest studio is underway, and the cafeteria has expanded to accommodate our growing school. Building Manager Jason Walters is working hard to orchestrate the construction, and has made every effort to maintain the aesthetics of Eliot Feld’s vision for the space by using raw materials and exposing brick wherever possible.

We are so excited to welcome students back this fall to beautiful new classrooms and a renovated cafeteria. We will continue to update the BT community as the construction progresses!
