A charge controller manages the power coming from your solar panels to charge a compatible battery safely within its specified limits.

The basic system flow is:

An inverter has a different job: converting DC electricity into AC electricity for compatible AC appliances.

These components do different jobs.

๐Ÿ”Œ INVERTER: DC โ†’ AC

A power inverter converts direct current from a suitable DC source into alternating current. Some off-grid inverters provide 120V AC for compatible US appliances.

โšก DC-DC CONVERTER: DC โ†’ DC

A DC-DC converter changes one DC voltage to another. For example, a buck converter may convert a nominal 12V DC input to a regulated 5V DC output.

Always check input limits, output ratings and equipment compatibility before connecting a load.

The concept is simple:

๐Ÿ”‹ 12V DC source

โšก DC-DC buck converter
โฌ‡๏ธ
๐Ÿ“ฑ 5V DC output

A buck converter reduces DC voltage to a lower DC voltage suitable for compatible electronics.

It's different from an inverter, which converts DC into AC.

One important detail: check the converter's input-voltage range and output-current rating before connecting a device. A 5V output does not automatically mean the converter can safely power every USB device.

Both controllers regulate battery charging from solar panels, but they work differently.

๐Ÿ”น PWM: Generally simpler technology that brings the panel's operating voltage close to battery voltage during charging.

๐Ÿ”น MPPT: Tracks the solar array's maximum power point and uses DC-DC conversion to adapt the available PV power to the battery's charging requirements.

MPPT can capture more available solar energy in suitable conditions, but the improvement is not a fixed percentage in every installation.

Your panel specifications, battery voltage, sunlight and system design all matter.
