Program Learning Outcomes:

The CCNY Master of Arts Program in Spanish teaches and guides students to achieve the following objectives:

1.- Develop critical thinking that could be applied to interdisciplinary research

2.- Reveal control of concepts learned in courses taken and the application of such concepts in the preparation of research papers.

3.- Implement online and other conventional research tools

4.- Present research findings orally and/or in writing in a professionally compelling fashion and with appropriate citations and attributions of origins

5.- Acquire professional preparation that will enable the candidate to be competitive in the academic job market and/or in a Ph.D. program

6.- Fulfill assignments within the prescribed period of time and in accordance with established classroom norms

7.- Demonstrate competence in both standard Spanish and English, as per the individual course's requirements

8.- Integrate MLA format appropriately

Seminario: Cátedra Mario Vargas Llosa 2026.

Estimada comunidad de la Maestría en Español, ya pueden registrarse para tomar el seminario; este año, tendremos el honor de contar con la presencia de la destacada poeta, ensayista, traductora y académica peruana, Mariela Dreyfus, como instructora invitada.

Aquí les compartimos su biografía:

Mariela Dreyfus is a Peruvian poet, essayist and translator who has lived in New York since 1989. She holds a Ph.D. in Latin American Literature from Columbia University. She has published the poetry collections Memorias de Electra (Lima 1984), Placer fantasma (Lima 1993), Ónix (Lima 2001), Pez (Lima 2005) –translated into English as Pez/Fish (New Delhi 2014), and into French as Pez/Poisson (Nantes 2019)-, Morir es un arte (Lima 2010; 2014), Cuaderno músico precedido de Morir es un arte (Madrid 2015), the latter translated into English as Music Notebook (Arizona 2023), and La edad ligera [novela en poesía] (Lima 2023). Her complete poems are included in the volumes Gravedad. Poemas reunidos (New York 2017), and Gravedad. Poesía completa (Madrid 2025). Arúspice Rascacielos. Poesía selecta (Lima 2021) includes a selection of her work. She has also published the book-length essay Soberanía y transgresión: César Moro (Lima 2008), and co-edited the critical volumes Nadie sabe mis cosas. Reflexiones en torno a la poesía de Blanca Varela (Lima 2007), and Esta mística de relatar cosas sucias. Ensayos en torno a la obra de Carmen Ollé (Lima 2016). Her translations of Edward Dorn, Sylvia Plath, Diane Wakoski and AI, are included in the anthology Muestra de poesía norteamericana contemporánea (Lima 1987). Her other literary translations include: La diosa de las Américas. Escritos sobre la Virgen de Guadalupe, edited by Ana Castillo (Nueva York 2000); An August Snow & Other Poems / Nieve de agosto y otros poemas, by Daniel Thomas Moran (New York 2014), and Cooling Time/Tiempo de enfriamiento by C.D. Wright (Madrid 2019). Her second book Placer fantasma was awarded the National Poetry Award Asociación Peruano-Japonesa in 1992; her most recent one, La edad ligera [novela en poesía], won the Premio “Luces” de “El Comercio” for best Poetry Book in 2024. In 2014 she was appointed Personalidad Meritoria de la Cultura by Ministerio de Cultura del Perú for her contribution to poetry. In 2016, 2018, and 2022, respectively, she was granted three research fellowships by the Global Research Initatives (GRI) office at New York University, to work on a creative writing project in Paris forthcoming next year. She currently teaches workshops in poetry and literary translation at the MFA in Creative Writing in Spanish Program at NYU.

Congrats to our awardees!
As every year, the CMLL department conferred awards and certificates in recognition of its students’ excellent scholarship in Arabic, Chinese, French, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese and Spanish. In both, undergrade and graduate levels.
The ceremony was held on Thursday, May 7, at 3:30 p.m., at The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture (141 Convent Avenue, New York, NY 10031).
