Did you know “thăm quan” isn’t actually a real Vietnamese word? 👻

It’s one of the most common mistakes in Vietnamese — used by learners, native speakers, and even some media outlets. But here’s the truth:

The correct word is tham quan (參觀) — a Sino-Vietnamese word that goes much deeper than just “sightseeing.”

According to the Vietnamese Dictionary by the Institute of Linguistics (Hoàng Phê, 2003), tham quan means: 👉 “to see with your own eyes in order to broaden knowledge or learn from experience”

So every time you visit a museum, a historical site, or a factory, you’re not just looking around. You’re doing exactly what the word was built for.

And yes — tham quan can also mean something completely different as a noun: 😈 Tham (貪) + Quan (官) = a corrupt official

Same spelling. Completely different characters. Different worlds.

That’s Vietnamese for you — context is everything.

You learned ‘xe máy’… but do you actually know what Vietnamese people call it on the street? 🛵

Spoiler: it depends on the bike. And the vibe. And honestly… the person 😅
Turns out ‘xe máy’ opens up a WHOLE rabbit hole

⚪️ xe gắn máy — legally, bikes UNDER 50cc (but Vietnamese people say it for everything 😅)

🔴 xe máy — legally, bikes OVER 50cc (the one your textbook taught you)

🔵 xe cub 50 — what people actually call the small ones on the street

🟢 xe số — manual bike, very Vietnamese energy

🟡 xe tay ga — automatic scooter, city coded

🟣 xe Honda — when Honda is just… everywhere 😄

🟠 xe độ — customized & a little extra

⚫️ xe mô tô phân khối lớn — big, loud, powerful

🟤 xe hai bánh — two wheels — not two cakes 🎂😆

One word. Many meanings. That’s Vietnamese for you.

Where does ‘xe mô tô’ even come from? Guess in the comments 👇

Vietnamese is beautiful… but also a little confusing sometimes 😭

These are the words that make us pause and think.

Not because they’re hard…
but because they’re almost the same.

Maybe language isn’t about memorizing more

maybe it’s about noticing more 💛

What about you?
Do these words confuse you too? 👀

🇬🇧 “MẸ” — such a small word, yet it carries a whole world of love ❤️

👉 In Vietnam, “mẹ” is the main word for mother.
But as you travel across the country, you’ll discover something beautiful: every region has its own way of calling her.

In the South (Nam Bộ), they say “má.”
In Thái Bình, it becomes “bu.”
In Hà Nam, you’ll hear “u.”
In Bắc Ninh, they lovingly say “bầm.”

Further along, in Huế, it’s “mạ.”
In Northern ethnic minority areas, “mế” is common.
And sometimes, there’s even a special tradition of calling a mother “mợ”, a wish for a healthy, thriving baby.

Different words, same meaning:
the person who loves you first, and forever 💛

✨ Vietnamese can be tricky! ✨

Did you know that tri thức and trí thức look almost the same but mean completely different things? 😲

Tri thức = knowledge, facts, what you learn 📚

Trí thức = an intellectual, a person with wisdom and education 🧠

One tiny accent makes all the difference! Can you guess which is which? 🤔

💡 Save this post to never mix them up again, and tag a friend who loves learning Vietnamese!

Tết is the best time to be with family.
Good food. Loud laughter. Full house.

And then…the games begin 🎲

That’s when the real chaos starts.
Suddenly everyone is competitive.
Uncles become strategists.
Cousins become rivals.
Grandma is somehow winning. 😂

But honestly?
That’s when you truly understand your family.
