Stop memorizing word lists!
Rote learning only works short-term.
Use context clues to figure out new words - yes, it takes more effort, but effort locks them into long-term memory.

Reading isn’t just about finishing the book - it’s about understanding it. A reading journal helps students slow down, think deeper, and actually remember what they read.

Motivation comes and goes, so stop searching for it.
Trying to look for ways to motivate your students or children will only lead to burnout, requiring you to constantly think of ways to get your child to do things. It also changes and fades quickly as the child’s interests and feelings fluctuate. Instead, focus on fostering good habits in your kids and you teach them that their desired outcomes are a result of their own daily choices, and not their emotion-based state of mind. Start small, like reading for 10 minutes in the same place and same time. Have them keep a tracker. That's how they learn to be proud of themselves.

Reading more books doesn’t always mean deeper understanding.
What makes the difference is reflection.

A reading journal helps children:
📘Slow down and think about the story
📘Remember key details and ideas
📘Build confidence as readers at their own pace and level
📘It creates a reading routine - a journal becomes an enjoyable habit, not a chore.
📘It makes progress visible. You can see their growth over time, which is very motivating!

That’s why I created a simple, printable reading journal- easy to use at home and in the classroom.
