With our free classes, low-income parents in New York City develop the literacy and language skills they need to succeed in today’s world. Our research-based curriculum also incorporates child development and parenting support to help parents boost their children’s early reading, school readiness, and social-emotional growth.

Back-to-school season is when parents and caregivers are looking for extra tools to support their kids' learning at home so we came with free books and bilingual literacy resources to help.

Literacy Partners is proud to connect Spanish-speaking families across NYC with resources that bring learning into everyday moments. As children learn and grow this school year, we're here to help families grow right alongside them.

Big news — we're growing our team! Literacy Partners is hiring a Senior Manager of Strategic Partnerships to lead partnership-building across schools, early childhood providers, healthcare organizations, and community groups in the San Diego and Las Vegas regions.

This is a role for someone who thrives on connection — someone who can walk into a community meeting, a school, or a funder's office and build the kind of trust that turns into real opportunity for the families we serve.

Must be Bilingual in English/Spanish.

This is what Barbara Houser's legacy looks like: a mother and her children, together in the library, building a future through literacy. 📖

Barbara grew up in a small rural town and reading was her passport into a bigger world. Her reading skills led her to learning several different languages, to traveling the world, and eventually, to volunteering at Literacy Partners.

Her nephew Eric remembers: "It was reading that introduced her to the world and education that enabled her to experience the world."

Before she passed, Barbara left an estate gift to Literacy Partners through our Literacy Champions Circle — a legacy that will touch families just like this one for generations she'll never meet.

What a joy it was to welcome families to La Colmena for Cooking Up Good Readers! 👩‍🍳📖

This hands-on event showed families that literacy doesn't only happen with a book — it can happen in the kitchen, too. Preparing food together grows vocabulary, builds motor skills, and introduces kids to new cultures, all through delicious recipes. Families enjoyed a story, made a tasty snack together, and connected with helpful resources from our community partners.

A huge thank-you to Literacy in Community, Staten Island Alliance for North Shore Children & Families, Community Health Center of Richmond, and NYC Department of Youth and Community Development for partnering with us to make this happen!

Some news to share 💛

We recently wrapped up a project, funded by the NYC Department of Education, looking into whether parents know about their right to interpretation and translation services at New York City Public Schools.

We talked with 26 parents across five focus groups and found that most didn't realize these services are a guaranteed right, not just something a school offers if it can.

The best part? Every parent left our sessions feeling more confident to speak up with their child's teacher, and many are already telling other parents what they learned. That's the ripple effect we hope for every day.

We're grateful to our partners at Macmillan Publishers for a recent volunteer event that brought a personal touch to our Books of Their Own program. 💛

A small group of volunteers sat down and handwrote 78 personal messages of encouragement — each one meant for a student in our Books of Their Own program to find inside their book bundle.

Imagine opening a new set of books for your family and finding a note inside that says: you're doing something incredible. You should be proud of yourself and the future you're building for your children.

What a year! 💛

In FY26, Literacy Partners deepened its roots in family literacy ecosystems across New York City, Philadelphia, Nevada, and San Diego.

What that looked like: 13 active partnerships (10 new, 3 renewed), 39 workshops delivered through our Family Engagement Workshops and Leyendo en Casa programs, and hundreds of parents and caregivers reached through schools, libraries, health organizations, and community coalitions.

As one of our partners at PS 74 put it: working together has "changed how the families show up" — creating a safe space families can count on.

Thank you to every school, library, and community partner who opened their doors to us this year. Here's to reaching even more families in FY27! 📖

Some of our favorite work happens outside the classroom in rooms full of people who care about the same thing we do: helping parents, caregivers, kids, and families thrive through literacy. 💛

Our team recently connected with an incredible group of partners on Staten Island — schools, libraries, healthcare providers, and community organizations — all coming together to talk about how we can support literacy.

Community isn't built alone. We're grateful for these connections and excited for what comes next.

At our 40th Annual Evening of Readings & Gala Dinner, bestselling author and honoree Patricia Cornwell reminded us why stories matter.

Literacy, she told us, is how we understand ourselves, each other, and the universe. It's a gateway to curiosity, to possibility, and to wherever your passion takes you. Perhaps, even to the stars. ✨

For Patricia Cornwell, reading and writing were more than skills. They were how she built a better world than the one she grew up in.

That's exactly why we do this work. Because when a person prioritizes their education, there's no limit to where it can take them.
