One week. New friendships. New experiences. A new beginning. ππ
Our MBK mentees are reflecting on everything theyβve experienced during their first week of the MBK Summer Program. From meeting new people to stepping outside their comfort zones, each day has been another step toward building confidence, community, and a successful college journey.
This is only the beginning. π«

Some lessons donβt just stay in the classroom, they stay with you.
During the MBK Summer Program, we interviewed Professor Gordon, who teaches AFR 124, to hear about his class, his teaching approach, and what he hopes MBK scholars take away from the experience.
Through meaningful discussions and classroom engagement, our scholars are building the knowledge and confidence they need for their college journey.

Great professors donβt just teach lessons, they help students see whatβs possible. ππ
Through Speech, Psychology, and Africana Studies, our MBK scholars are building the knowledge, confidence, and skills they need to succeed at BMCC.
A special thank-you to Professor Terry, Professor Lorio, Professor Smart, and Professor Gordon for investing in our scholars and making the MBK Summer Program at UMLA a meaningful experience.

Success starts with the right mindset, clear priorities, and the confidence to take ownership of your future. π―
During the MBK Summer Program, Ashtian Holmes led our MBK Scholars through an engaging session on managing their time and energy, using available resources, building meaningful connections, seeking mentorship, and creating opportunities instead of waiting for them.
The session reminded our scholars that their voices, decisions, and actions matter. At BMCC UMLA, we are helping students develop the confidence, community, and habits needed to succeed in college and beyond. ππ
Thank you, Ashtian Holmes, for sharing your knowledge and encouraging our scholars to take control of their journey.
Mentorship is about receiving support, and choosing to pass it forward. π€π½π
Our MBK mentors reflect on why they stepped into leadership, the importance of building community, and the misconceptions young men of color continue to overcome.
Through their experiences, they are helping the next generation feel seen, supported, and confident in who they can become. π
At UMLA & MBK, we push each other to keep going. πͺπ½
During the MBK Summer Program, a simple push-up challenge became a moment of encouragement, accountability, and brotherhood.
Whether it is in the classroom or beyond, our students remind one another that growth happens when you have a community supporting you.
Special shoutout to MBK Mentor Raul Appana and MBK Coordinator Fareed Safo for joining the students, leading by example, and showing that mentorship means being present and getting involved. π€π½

Success starts with knowing where to go for supportππ
During the MBK Summer Program, Julio Vaca introduced students to the College Success Toolkit, sharing strategies to study smarter, stay organized, and succeed at BMCC.
Marc Louis also spoke about tutoring and reminded students that asking for academic support is not a weakness, it is part of becoming a stronger and more confident student.
Through UMLA and MBK, our goal is to connect students with the tools, resources, mentorship, and community they need to succeed inside and outside the classroom.

Meet the people who will be walking alongside our students throughout the MBK Summer Program. π€π½π₯
Our MBK mentors introduced themselves, shared their personalities, and gave students a glimpse of the community supporting them throughout their college journey.
Mentorship is more than giving advice. It is about listening, building trust, sharing experiences, and reminding students that they always have someone in their corner.
This is only the beginning, but the connections are already being built.

Behind every student who succeeds is a community that chooses to show up. π€π½π
During the MBK Summer Program, our students heard directly from BMCC leadership, faculty, staff, guest speakers, and the MBK teamβall committed to helping them grow academically, professionally, and personally.
Each conversation reminded our students that support is not limited to one office or one person. An entire community is ready to answer questions, offer guidance, open doors, and help them move forward.
The final group photo says it all: no student should have to navigate college alone.
