Congratulations to Salathiel Simon, recipient of the Morgan Stanley Distinction Award for his accomplishments in the Morgan Stanley Career Preparation Program!

Salathiel is a rising junior at Jackson Memorial High School in ABC's Northeast region. A true lover of all things STEM, his interests and accomplishments span aviation and engineering, participation in programs at Brown University and the University of Michigan, and involvement with the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals. Reflecting on what he learned through the program, Salathiel shared: "Rather than simply asking 'what do I want to be?' I now ask 'what skills and habits need to be developed right now to ensure long-term success?'"

The Distinction Award recognizes Scholars whose growth and leadership throughout the program stand out among their peers.

Congratulations to Jordan McNeil, recipient of the Morgan Stanley Distinction Award for his accomplishments in the Morgan Stanley Career Preparation Program!

Jordan, a rising senior at The Dalton School in ABC's New York Metro region, has a strong interest in both the legal field and photography. Reflecting on the program, he shared: "Before starting this program, I never would have imagined that career preparation is something that was so simple to begin with for someone my age. Congratulations to Jai'Nye Beauford, recipient of the Morgan Stanley Distinction Award for her accomplishments in the Morgan Stanley Career Preparation Program!

Throughout high school, Jai'Nye built an impressive record of academic and extracurricular achievement, maintaining a 4.2 GPA while serving as President of the Student Government Association at The Galloway School. Even so, she calls receiving the 2026 Distinction Award her "golden badge of honor." Jai'Nye aspires to become a Constitutional Court Judge and will continue her academic journey this fall at Washington & Lee University. Of her experience in the program, she said the mock interview was the most impactful activity, describing it as "nurturing and impactful."

The Morgan Stanley Distinction Award is presented annually to a select group of Scholars who demonstrate outstanding engagement, leadership, and professional growth throughout the Morgan Stanley Career Preparation Program, a year-long career readiness initiative connecting high school students with industry professionals through hands-on development experiences. Honorees also exemplify the impact of mentorship, intentional skill-building, and a community of peers committed to one another's success.

This is the first in a series of posts celebrating our 2026 Distinction Award recipients. Stay tuned as we introduce more honorees throughout the rest of August!

Scholar Spotlight: Zari Gives Back

At A Better Chance, we believe that investing in young people creates a ripple effect of positive change.

This summer, ABC Scholar Zari, a rising senior at Westminster, completed Philanthropy 101, a course designed to help students better understand philanthropy and the role nonprofit organizations play in strengthening communities.

Inspired by what she learned—and by her own experience as an ABC Scholar—Zari selected A Better Chance as the recipient of her $500 class donation.

We are honored by Zari's generosity and grateful that she chose to invest in the organization that has been part of her educational journey. Her leadership, compassion, and commitment to giving back embody the very values we strive to instill in every Scholar.

Congratulations, Zari, and thank you for making an impact that will help future generations of ABC Scholars thrive.

Every year, we place high-achieving students from underserved communities into the nation's leading independent and public schools. We call it placement. It is measured as a number, and that number understates what it does.

Zachary, one of three Scholars in his family, describes the part that never shows up if we simply tally placements. Families revise what they believe is possible. The effect moves through a neighborhood, giving younger students reference points and role models they can see. And it returns years later in the form of Alumni who invest in the communities that raised and supported them.

That is the multiplier at the center of this work. One placement, measured properly, is never about a single outcome.

Watch Zachary tell it in his own words.

We believe that zip codes shouldn't dictate futures.

For 60 years, A Better Chance has been putting talent directly in the way of opportunity. We’re proud to say 96% of our graduating seniors walk straight into college!

But lasting change doesn't happen overnight, and it definitely doesn't happen alone. It takes people showing up month after month.
