This is what happens in our home-school Waldorf-style summer bridge between Class 4 and Class 5. For local geography in Class 4, we continued in person with field trips across all five boroughs of New York City, and this was our last borough: the Bronx. We were learning as we went, and with each picture, each stop, each moment, there was a new lesson for all of us.

As for Class 5, I actually had not even introduced that lesson yet. Zoe wanted to find songs about Penelope and Odysseus from EPIC: The Musical, and now she is completely obsessed with them. She has learned all the lyrics, and I’m sure her Class 5 teacher will be impressed.

I simply followed the child’s lead and supported her interest in Homer’s Odyssey whenever she showed curiosity. That’s the best way to educate a child: they learn deeply, and they don’t even realize it.

And then there’s dirty. Not always a bad thing. Catharsis exists only because of the dirt around us. Clarity is a virtue because we live in a world of confusion. But that’s a much bigger conversation, so I’ll leave it for another time.

My morning thoughts today: clarity is what remains when catharsis does the work. A quick search led me to Aristotelian catharsis in organizational behavior, its workplace meaning, and the leadership use of catharsis in clarity. Gotta love these weekday morning thoughts.
