What message do award shows send about what the industry values?

Jason Graff, Pharma Jury Chair, Global Chief Creative Officer at VML Health, shares how the work we recognize sets the standard for excellence, challenges agencies to push further, and inspires the next generation of creative work.

As the industry reflects on what was done last year, the question becomes: how do we raise the bar this year?

NYF Advertising 2027, opening October 30th, will bring together an international group of world-class judges to determine just that, spotlighting and awarding work never seen before and boundary-breaking creativity telling the greatest brand stories in the world, all with that particular New York City hard-nosed edge.

New for 2026, New York Festivals Health introduced Human Lens: The Lived Experience, a category and Specialty Jury recognizing healthcare storytelling shaped by the people whose experiences are at its heart.

This Specialty Jury will be led by Co-Chairs Jordan Rathkopf and Anna Rathkopf, Co-Founders of RATHKOPF, a patient and caregiver-led strategy and storytelling studio and will be supported by eight more dedicated Jury Members passionate about real patient stories.

We have been featuring these Jury Members through our Health Pulse Interview Series, and today we spotlight Elyse Spatz Caplan, a strategic advisor in patient advocacy and empowerment. Check out her full interview: https://www.nyfhealth.com/media/Interior/d20fe048-6362-4679-94bb-98ece95c393d

Why is the Human Lens category important right now?

Elyse Spatz Caplan, MA: Storytelling is everywhere in healthcare, but it only works if it's authentic—and a lot of organizations think they're already doing that without realizing they're not doing it the way patients actually experience it. Too often, a team signs off on a concept, an agency starts drafting, they hit a snag, and then someone says, let's consult a patient/advocate. Patients and caregivers are the subject-matter experts—they belong in the project while the idea is being shaped, not called in midstream to fix something. If you speak with patients they will tell you first-hand, "nothing about us; without us."

Midstream can still work if the team is open to feedback and has built in time to act on it—otherwise, it's inefficient and disrespects the people who gave their time and input. The Human Lens shows what happens when lived experience is embedded from the start, not added at the end to validate a decision already made.

What do award shows say about what our industry values?

According to Rich Levy, Chief Creative Officer at Klick Health and Jury Chair of the Health & Wellness Executive Jury for the NYF Health Awards, it’s about recognizing the people behind the work, the risks they take, the craft, the effort and the journey it takes to bring an idea from a blank piece of paper to the marketplace.

At the NYF Health Awards, we’re celebrating the work and the people who make it possible.

"You'll Be Back" taps into the phenomenon of meme humor to effectively break down barriers surrounding joint replacement. One of the challenges the agency faced was to balance humor with the serious nature of the subject, ensuring that the message remained motivational without trivializing the experiences of those living with joint pain. The campaign was recognized with a Bronze Award at the 2025 New York Festivals Health Awards.

By leveraging Arnold's comedic delivery on social media platforms, Klick Health transformed insights into relatable narratives that got viewers to take actionable steps toward better mobility. The campaign's objectives were met through engaging content that resonated with their audience, while giving them a way forward at YoullBeBack.com. Within just the first week, the campaign made over 330 million impressions and their find-a-doctor tool saw a 12x higher completion rate. Current estimates show that 30% of those who used the tool will go on to get a new knee, driving significant revenue for Zimmer Biomet.

"Healthcare advertising often asks people to take action by making the stakes feel heavier. We saw an opportunity to make the next step feel lighter. Humor gives people a way past their fear, and Arnold gives them someone they actually want to follow."
-Vicky Klaynman - VP, Group Creative Director, Klick Health

"We took the silliness seriously: cinematic lighting, an old-school home gym setup, and completely straight-faced absurdity. That tension let us have fun with Arnold's mythology while opening up a very real conversation about getting back to life."
-Kasey McLaughlin - VP, Group Creative Director, Klick Health

What changes when lived experience becomes more than inspiration for a health campaign, and actually shapes the idea itself?

For Glenn Batkin, the answer starts with looking closer.

As a Specialty Juror for NYF Health’s inaugural Human Lens: The Lived Experience category, Glenn brings more than 25 years of experience as an award-winning Creative Director and Art Director, along with a deeply personal connection to the realities of living with illness.

He’s looking for work where people with lived experience have a genuine hand in shaping the work, from the insight and strategy to the final ex*****on.
“The people living the reality often understand the real story in a way no brief ever can.”

Meet Glenn and discover what he’ll be looking for when he judges the work redefining what it means to create health communications with people, not simply about them. Read the full interview, link in bio.
