The acting out is a symptom of a need not being met. We have to decode what the need is, instead of assuming they are 'pushing our buttons on purpose' or 'just looking for attention.' These judgements do not serve you as a parent, and they disregard the fact that your child is searching for connection in the only way they know how.

Yes! This is a very important distinction. We CAN put in limits for our children while making space for all of their feelings (not just the acceptable feelings). When our children know that we can sit with them in an uncomfortable, vulnerable space it creates a deep knowing that they can come to use at any point in their development with difficult experiences and that we will be there for them.

Emotional isolation is a terrifying experience at any age- but for our children who desperately need an adult in their lives- it can change the course of their entire trajectory as they learn that they are alone, that the adults in their world are cold and distant, and that the world is a lonely place.

Let your calm be contagious...When we are able to calm our stress response, we are helping to nurture how our child responds in a stressful situation. Their stress response often mirrors our stress response. Think carefully about the type of experience you want to model for your child...and remember that it is repeated experiences that shape the brain.
