Meet Gabriel Rauterberg, a scholar of corporate and securities law, who joined the Columbia Law School faculty as a professor of law on July 1.

Rauterberg, whose expertise includes corporate governance, capital markets, contracts, and financial institutions, is drawn to the profound questions raised by corporate and securities law. “Once you get past some of the daunting nomenclature, it’s an area with a genuinely exciting set of issues about how the financial system is evolving,” he says. “It’s a field with a lot of intellectual integrity. And it’s really important to the world.”

Now, as a member of the full-time Columbia Law faculty, Rauterberg is looking forward to teaching Corporations and a J.D./MBA cross-listed upper-level course on Private Markets and Private Funds. In subsequent semesters, he will teach Capital Markets and Regulation.

Rauterberg discusses his scholarship, his path to the law, and his move from litigation practice to academia: https://bit.ly/4h4cynH

Congratulations to Professor Kimberlé W. Crenshaw on her election to the fellowship of the British Academy, the U.K.’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences.

Crenshaw is a pioneering scholar of civil rights, critical race theory, race and the law, and feminist legal theory. Widely known for coining the term “intersectionality” to describe the double bind of simultaneous racial and gender prejudice, she is the founding director of the Law School’s Center for Intersectionality and Social Policy Studies.

Prediction markets, like Kalshi and Polymarket, offer users the ability to bet on the occurrence of events as large as election outcomes and as small as high temperatures on a given day in a specific location. But securities law expert Professor Joshua Mitts says that a considerable amount of trading appears to be based on insider information.

In a new paper, Mitts and co-author Moran Ofir of the University of Haifa analyzed all Polymarket contracts from February 2024 to February 2026 and found more than 210,000 suspicious bets.

“These bets achieved a nearly 70% win rate, well in excess of chance,” says Mitts. “We estimate these traders earned $143 million in aggregate profit. There is a problem. The scope of that problem is open for debate.”

In a Q&A, Mitts discusses the pair’s research, the legal frameworks currently governing prediction markets, and recommendations for reforms to address informed trading on the platforms. https://bit.ly/3U49or3

Columbia Law School alumni from class years ending in 1 and 6 gathered in Morningside Heights to reminisce, reflect, recharge, and renew relationships at Reunion 2026, held June 5 and 6.

The event-filled weekend kicked off with a cocktail reception at Gotham Hall in midtown Manhattan on Friday, followed later that evening by LL.M. and affinity group after-parties. Saturday’s events on the Morningside campus included an all-class breakfast, alumni discussions on current legal topics, a special presentation from the Dean, a picnic lunch, and individual class celebrations.

In his “State of the School” presentation, Dean Daniel Abebe said that he senses “a feeling of excitement about what lies on the horizon, and a sense of purpose to define this institution’s next era of success. … I can see quite clearly how far we have come as a community, and I can see how far we can clearly go, together.”
