SSM Seongjun shares their experience with the Writing Center !

Hello, my name is Javier Hernandez and I am Student Success Mentor and alumni at LaGuardia Community College! It was very hectic and unfocused, major learning curves and ups and downs and I switched my major from Computer Science to Programming and Software but looking back at it I wished I went to a peer mentor since I regret that decision. I came across resource issues, I didn’t know that there was a writing center, a math center, asap. Basically resources that would’ve made my first semester easier. Some resources that I use are the writing center, math center, MB-44, asap resource center, career service office, gym facilities and more. My advice to first year students is to take fully advantage of every resource LaGuardia offers since you are paying for it.

Our student leaders and mentors are incredible! Today marks the first day of spring break, but that didn’t stop them from participating in an energizing and impactful professional development session.
Today, we held our Supporting Civic Engagement & the Success of Immigrant Students event at LaGuardia. Several mentorship and student leadership programs from across the teamed up.
The event was full of inspiration, energy, and motivation to support our communities, featuring an inspiring speech by Angy Rivera and her work with immigrant communities, a session on immigrant resources and information, and, finally, Civic Engagement and Voter Mobilization, led by Jatnna De La Cruz from .
Not only did we gain valuable knowledge, but we also brainstormed our action plan to encourage more people to register to vote.

Hello, my name is Toe and I am a Student Success Mentor and alumni at LaGuardia Community College. My first-year experience at LaGuardia was all over the place but looking back, it shaped me in ways I truly value now. Being an immigrant and moving to NYC at 19, everything was not easy for me. I had some difficult time to immerse myself in new environment and make everything from the beginning at school. I decided to challenge myself to open opportunities and experiences. I got to know myself and developed confidence, skills, and a strong sense of direction. At the beginning of my first semester, socializing felt challenging for me. As I slowly began talking with my classmates, I realized we had a lot in common. Having people to chat with at school made me feel more comfortable and included. The more connections I built, the more opportunities seemed to come my way.
My advice to first-year students is to step out of your comfort zone and stay open to new experiences, even if they feel intimidating at first, because that is often where the most growth happens. Make use of campus resources such as tutoring centers, advisors, and career services early on instead of waiting until you are overwhelmed, and try to manage your time wisely by keeping track of deadlines and balancing school with your personal life. Most importantly, be patient with yourself as adjusting to college takes time, and every small effort you make contributes to your confidence, skills, and overall personal growth.
