The Newhouse NYC Summer 2026 program is in full swing! We are thrilled to welcome back Professor Elissa Cohen & Professor Erik Forrest Jackson, who "accidentally" coordinated their orange & blue for the first day of class. 🧡💙
Professor Cohen teaches COM 509: Communications Law in NYC and Professor Jackson teaches COM 350: Diversity in Broadway Theater. We can't wait to see the exciting lessons they have in store for the summer students!

We ended day of orientation with some Black Sesame Tahini Croissants and Blueberry Cardamom Sweet Buns at . Vanilla soft serve was another crowd favorite! 🥐 🍦
This new bakery is dangerously close to the Syracuse University Fisher Center, so it was nice to take a short walk in this glorious weather!

Today was Day 1 of Newhouse NYC summer orientation, and we were excited to welcome all 39 students to the city!
Thank you to Newhouse (and Newhouse NYC) alumni Lukas Gibson (Account Executive at Havas Life New York), Camille Lavoie (Account Supervisor at VML) and Amanda Rosenthal (Writer at NYT Wirecutter) for sharing the best tips for succeeding in the city at our “Becoming a New Yorker” panel. We know the students will be even more prepared to begin their internships and navigate NYC because of your advice. Looking forward to tomorrow for Day 2!

As part of the Maymester program, COM 300 students traveled to the to meet Newhouse NYC alumna, Danielle Villaluna ‘19, Senior Manager of Public Relations & Communications. Danielle took students on a tour around the exhibit, “Sculpting the Senses”, where they could see the craftsmanship from one fashion's most revolutionary designers.
The exhibit featured more than 140 haute couture pieces alongside contemporary artworks and designs, scientific artifacts and natural history specimens, along with a soundscape that created an amazing multi-sensory experience.
As students walked through the exhibit, they were able to talk to Danielle about how her work in PR & Comms. allows her to be involved in the curation and creation of the exhibits and the larger story the museum is telling.
Thank you Danielle for giving our students an unforgettable afternoon of fashion and inspiration!

Maymester may be over, but don’t worry… We have plenty of memories to still share! On day two of week two students visited the offices, where they were introduced to Kristie Dash (Head of Beauty Partnerships), Helena Suric, (Leader of Fashion & Beauty Creator Partnerships), and Elisa Benson (Lifestyle & Media Programs).
They spoke about the three pillars of what she believes Beauty Partnerships means at Instagram: Education, Product, and Cultural Moments. They also gave students advice on how to make big transitions in their career, how to break-in to an industry you have no connections in, and work hard in junior positions while also maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Huge thanks to Kristie, Helena, and Elisa for welcoming us and giving our students a masterclass on navigating the ever-evolving world of tech and media!

Week two of the Newhouse NYC Maymester kicked off with visits from two amazing industry professionals: Priya Rao, Executive Editor at The , and Kaitlyn Frey, Senior Copywriter at NARS ().
📰 Priya Rao spoke about what it takes to be a fashion journalist, emphasizing the importance of knowing how to pitch, and understanding what details to focus on.
💄 alumna Kaitlyn Frey spoke about what it means to be an in-house copywriter for a beauty brand, and how different teams work together to create a solid campaign. She also talked about her time at , her experience in the program, and how to succeed at your internships and post-grad.

After visit to Hearst Tower, the Maymester students took a stroll down 7th Ave and visited the office. Here theythey met alumni Sharon Kanter, Vice President of Global Marketing, and Kylie Gorsky, Communications Assistant. 👠👢🥿
As the student stepped into the Stuart Weitzman showroom, they got a behind the scenes look into their new collection, and Sharon walked them through how she tells the story for each piece and make sure consumers find the shoe that fits them and their personality. She also discussed her career pivot into fashion marketing, breaking down how the skills she built as a journalist paved the way for her current success.
Kylie then talked about the art and business behind influencer marketing, emphasizing the importance of brand image and relatability. She shared how her Newhouse foundation has helped her thrive in her role and motivated students to stay hardworking and persistent as they launch their own careers.
Talk about an amazing end to week one of the Newhouse NYC Maymester program!

Week one of the Newhouse NYC Maymester ended on a total high note! Professor took her class on not one but two site visits… To get started, the students had the opportunity to visit the team at their HQ! Here a recap of their time there:
The first stop on their tour was the fashion closet where they met Fashion Director Brandon Tan. He talked about the process of setting up a cover shoot and handling the incredible pieces that come through the fashion closet doors.
Stop two was the beauty closet, of course! There they met Beauty Editor-at-Large Julee Wilson who explained her product review and writing processes. also talked spoke the importance of diversity and representation in beauty and how she conveys that through her work.
Students also met Lucy Dolan-Zalaznick, Director of Social Media and Video. Lucy talked about the importance of social media in driving a magazine brand and the importance of having a team that values and encourages creativity.
Last but certainly not least, students met Editor-in-Chief Willa Bennett! Willa talked about her journey to becoming Editor-in-Chief for an iconic publication like . She also gave advice on sharing your unique voice and putting your writing for the world to see!
