WholeFoods 365 Sport Laundry Detergent a deep dive review! This one is a bit longer so buckle up!!!

I was nervous to post this one because this detergent reigns supreme on the laundry subreddit, but in my testing it performed below average. At the standard 1oz dose it scored a 40.5. So before publishing, I looped in a mentor and laundry subreddit legend, /u/KismaiAesthetics, to help make sense of it.

The theory: too little surfactant per dose. We retested at 2oz and the score jumped to 52.8, a 33% gain. The culprit is the 92% biobased formula. Whole Foods’ strict ingredient restrictions rule out a lot of cheap, effective synthetic surfactants, and plant-based alternatives can’t fully match that performance, so something had to give.

The upside is the enzyme blend: DNase and lipase. DNase is rare in detergents and targets body-based residues, while lipase breaks down the oily buildup that causes stink and yellowing on collars and armpits. That’s the real reason this detergent has such a devoted following.

Kismai’s recommendation if you use it: pour 2oz, add a separate oxi-based surfactant booster, and plan to pretreat stains. It’s effective, but it’s a process.

A few caveats: I can’t test odor removal or body-oil staining directly with my swatches, so real-world performance on stink and yellowing is likely better than the score suggests. It’ll also likely underperform in hard water or older top-loaders since it’s light on water softeners. And DNase isn’t exclusive to this brand anymore, Dirty Labs boosters and Dadmode’s stain remover now include it too.

It’s also genuinely hard to find (I couldn’t source it in NYC, a follower shipped me some), and at 2oz it runs about 35 cents a load, above the 20-cent average.

Verdict: a meaningful step forward in green detergent chemistry, held back by cost and availability constraints. If you’ve got stinky synthetics and can track it down, it’s worth the extra work.

Wool shrinkage, otherwise known as felting, is caused by the scales or barbs on the fiber.

Add water, agitation, and heat, and those barbs latch onto neighboring fibers, forming millions of permanent connections. Minor shrinkage can sometimes be coaxed back with conditioner, steam, and blocking, but once it’s felted hard, those bonds are unbreakable.

Fine wool and cashmere resist this better since their barbs are smaller and less aggressive.

Moral of the story: read your care labels, and never toss wool in the wash with hot water and agitation unless you’re trying to make felt on purpose.

Gain Plus just dropped, and it’s a genuine standout and scored a 95.2, top 5 overall, second best liquid detergent I’ve ever tested. ILoveGain

P&G consolidated Gain Plus Oxi, Odor Defense, and All Day Scent into one formulation, and the results speak for themselves.

12-15 cents a load depending on size, well under the 20 cent average. Extremely affordable, extremely effective.

The catch: it’s fragrant which is the whole Gain identity. If you want your clothes to smell like laundry detergent, this is your product. Not my thing, but I know a lot of people are obsessed!

Sunscreen stains are notoriously tricky, here’s what actually works.

Carbona’s rust remover does a decent job, and here’s the chemistry: some sunscreen ingredients (metals and minerals) oxidize and rust when they hit sweat or water. It’s the same principle behind RustGo, the product we use as dry cleaners, just with much less aggressive acids.

How to treat it:

1) Apply the rust remover, blot it in
2) Let it sit 15 minutes
3) Wash as recommended
4) Color still there? Follow with oxygen bleach and air dry inside or in the shade

Honest expectations: this won’t work on every sunscreen stain. There are dozens of sunscreen formulations out there, and the “why” behind a stain matters as much as the stain itself. Pool water exposure might come out clean, but the same sunscreen hit with salt water could set permanently. Another formula might only stain if you were sweating heavily. Chemistry, not consistency, decides the outcome.

No two sunscreen stains are the same, but this method gives you the best shot!

It felt good to save this paint and blood stained puffer jacket. Hopefully good karma is headed our way!!!

DIY laundry detergent has ripped through social media and caused an enormous amount of long term damage.

Creators claim that a few simple ingredients mixed together will result in a high performance, inexpensive, and ‘nontoxic’ detergent. These ingredients often include: washing soda, borax, baking soda, shaved soap bars, epsom salt, and essential oil. Don’t get me wrong, SOME of these are helpful, specifically washing soda and borax, which are great water softeners.

At this point, it’s a beast that’s gone rogue and I don’t see it stopping anytime soon. The good news is that unless you fall victim to it, it wont affect you (unless you notice someone stinky next to you).

So, consider this my retirement from correcting and reviewing DIY detergent content. The best thing we can hope for is for everyone to come to their senses and use products that very very intelligent people spend years formulating.
