Radical Pedagogies Explores Teaching Lessons from the Past 09/07/2022

“The contribution of Radical Pedagogies is how it documents such varied accounts from diverse institutions. In some cases, the activism tapered off after several years; in others, the new pedagogical models became absorbed into the institutions and reshaped them.” –Eric Höweler

Radical Pedagogies Explores Teaching Lessons from the Past A dossier of 1960s and ’70s pedagogical experiments from around the world, a new book collects accounts of teaching techniques and organizational models that resonate today.

Rivoluzione! Opening spread for “Counter Hegemonies,” the first section of the Radical Pedagogies book.

“Between April 25 and 27, 1969, following a year that saw massive demonstrations and occupations of universities around the world, the teaching assistants, faculty, and students of the architectural department at the Polytechnic of Turin hosted an exhibition and conference in collaboration with the Unione Culturale Franco Antonicelli. Within the context of the political turmoil of the late 1960s, the participants in Utopia e/o Rivoluzione (Utopia and/or Revolution) chose instead to use dialogue, discussion, text, and image to question the role of architectural education and challenge the subservience of the discipline to the logic of capitalism. While the organizers of the meeting were all affiliated with the Polytechnic of Turin, they were careful to emphasize that the initiative was unconnected to the institution. Just as the previous year’s student movement had begun outside of the university, the Utopia e/o Rivoluzione (Ue/oR) group wanted to have a certain distance when it came to questioning the pedagogy of the school, which they felt was training students to be ‘product[s]
of a cultural machine,’ with an uncritical approach to the making of the city.” Excerpt from case study contributed by Alicia Imperiale

Detail of poster for the Utopia e/o Rivoluzione (Utopia and/or Revolution) exhibition sponsored by the cultural Union of Turin and organized by assistants and students at the Faculty of Architecture at Turin University, Apr 1960. From Marcatré, February-July 1969.
