The School of Art and Design History and Theory (ADHT) at Parsons School of Design offers courses to students in all degrees. ADHT administers the first-year undergraduate curriculum, treating the analysis of art and design practices as essential to the formation of human knowledge and culture. ADHT also offers three master’s programs — Design Studies, Fashion Studies, and the History of Design and Curatorial Studies.

In partnership with Student Organization Nibbling Conscience and The New Store, the First Year Program launched its first ever t-shirt design contest. We received some amazing submissions over the course of this semester and our panel of esteemed judges have narrowed it down to our final three submissions. Now The New School community has the chance to come together and choose the design that best represents us, with the winning artwork being produced and sold in the store during Orientation week.

You’re invited to join us for our final screening in the First Year Film Series this academic year THIS Saturday May 2nd at 7pm (L105, UC Lower Level)!

Take a break from finals, relax, bring friends and make some new ones as we enjoy an evening of community, cinema, and popcorn and watch movies recommended by our very own Time faculty! Our last movie in the series this year is Amélie (2001) directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. The screening starts at 7 PM in the University Center, in Room L105 (UC Lower Level). Free and open to all in the University community!

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO APRIL 17 to submit to our annual Student GIF Competition!

All First-Year students are encouraged to participate in this competition. There will be prizes awarded to the top three entries, which will be exhibited on loop in 2 West 13th Street.

To enter:
* Your GIF can be one that you created as part of a course, or something new / independent that you’ve made
* One entry per student allowed
* Files should be no larger than 50MB in size
* Dimensions and duration are variable
* Your file should be labeled STUDENT NAME_TITLE.gif
* Non-conforming submissions will not be included
* Entries must be received by April 17th, 11:59pm

Coming up tonight at 7pm! Student Led Workshop Series: Pour The Pattern!

We invite you all to attend this Plaster-based workshop led by Parsons Graduate student Ashna Puri. Cotter Christian’s Graduate class will be providing a week long series of workshops for First Year students to participate in. We hope you all take advantage of this amazing opportunity to learn from one of your peers.

Plaster casting through terrazzo and marbling techniques. Students will explore how pattern, color and material behavior shape surface design while creating their own trays pc. The session focuses on process-driven making, teaching students how to mix and pour, work with aggregates and generate marbled effects through controlled and chance based methods. We will also talk about sustainability with terrazzo. 
All skill sets are welcome. All materials will be provided.
Materials to Bring:
* Bring any broken ceramic pc/colored glass to embed in casting. (OPTIONAL)

Coming up tonight at 7pm! Student Led Workshop Series: Illuminated Design

We invite you all to attend a lantern making workshop led by Parsons Graduate students Daksha Pathak & Rebecca Bone. Cotter Christian’s Graduate class will be providing a week long series of workshops for First Year students to participate in. We hope you all take advantage of this amazing opportunity to learn from one of your peers.

In this workshop, students will explore light as a medium for self expression. Students will design four panels of a lantern to keep, each focused on a specific quality of light, using gels, paper, and cardboard cut outs. From these hands-on explorations of light, students will develop a deep understanding of manipulating light in a meaningful way, for narrative and spatial storytelling.

All skill sets are welcome. All materials will be provided.

Coming up tonight! Student Led Workshop Series: Wet Felting and Redefining Waste!

We invite you all to attend a wet felting workshop led by Parsons Graduate student Madeline Brubaker. Cotter Christian’s Graduate class will be providing a week long series of workshops for First Year students to participate in. We hope you all take advantage of this amazing opportunity to learn from one of your peers.

In this workshop, students will work with waste wool from local farms and felt their own wall hangings. Students will work with multiple types of wool, natural dyed and raw, and learn how deep material engagement can be a method of research in their own work. 

All skill sets are welcome. All materials will be provided.
Materials to Bring:
* Wear clothing you are comfortable with getting a little wet or dirty
About the host:
Madeline is an artist and strategist rooted between Utah and New York, working at the intersection of ecology, community, and public life. Her current MFA thesis brings waste wool from rural farms into city spaces — weaving people back into the systems that sustain them. Madeline’s work can be found in various community spaces in Brooklyn, including the Gowanus Dredgers, the Tea Stand, and the Prospect Heights Community Garden.
