At Sacred Heart, our Lower School students start exploring the basics of oral presentation in Kindergarten. They practice key skills like eye contact, expression, volume, posture, and poise. Through presentations, they build confidence while developing sequencing and organizational abilities. Public speaking is woven into our academic and interdisciplinary projects, helping students strengthen their ability to identify important facts and share information effectively with different audiences.

This morning, Upper School came together for a special MLK Prayer Service. Students and faculty were inspired by 91st Street alumna Ny Whitaker ’93, who shared a powerful message about the importance of being an involved member of your community and advocating for positive change.

Seniors in the elective, 21st Century Citizenship, engaged directly with elected officials and community leaders for the class's culminating task! In meetings with Councilman Keith Powers and State Assemblyman Eddie Gibbs, students addressed critical issues such as affordable housing, services for domestic violence victims, e-bike regulations, and mental health resources. They also learned about running for local office from city council candidate Virginia Maloney. These experiences empower our students to make their voices heard and shape the future of our city and state!

On Friday, the Junior class returned from Kairos, a three-day annual retreat where the entire grade spends time together, learns about themselves, and opens themselves to God’s grace.

Upper School Art History students recently visited the Almine Rech Gallery to explore the works of renowned French artist Marie Laurencin. A notable 20th-century artist, Laurencin is celebrated as one of the few female Cubists, leaving her mark on the movement with her distinctive style and vision.

For their solar system project, sixth graders conducted six weeks of in-depth research on an assigned celestial body to learn about its origin, features, and how scientists explore and investigate it. In addition to presenting their research to the class, they also sculpted and painted models of their celestial bodies to share with the school!🪐☄️

Grade 4 has been exploring the art of weaving this winter! Drawing inspiration from the elements of shape, color, texture, and various design principles, students experimented with weaving techniques, including tabby weave, dovetailing, soumak, and rya knots. Throughout the unit, students were introduced to the work of textile artists Bisa Butler, Tammy Kanat, and Joanna Schnieder.

Upper School students participated in Wintersession on the last day of classes before break! This special day allowed students to take two immersive classes, on topics of their choice, all led by Upper School faculty. This year’s offerings included Introduction to Rock Climbing, Scenes & Songs from Wicked, Christmas at The Met, Figure Drawing, Gingerbread Architecture, and many more!

Charlotte Guerrera ’11, a proud 91st Street alumna and orthodontist based in New York City, paid a special visit to our Kindergarten students last week! While visiting, Charlotte spoke to students about the importance of good dental health and building healthy habits.

The first week of the India immersion trip is coming to a close, and the next phase of the journey has officially begun. Our 91st Street group arrived at St. Theresa School in Haregaon, where they joined Sacred Heart students from India and Australia to celebrate the Feast of St. Madeleine Sophie!

This morning, Grade 10 Chemistry used gravimetric analysis to calculate how many moles of water were bonded to various hydrates. Students collaborated in groups to gather both qualitative and quantitative data to complete the experiment.

On Saturday, 12 students and 3 teachers arrived in India for a two-week trip focusing on academics, culture, and service. Their first stop was Mumbai, where they will experience being a child of the Sacred Heart at our sister school Sophia College.

Second grade has been learning all about New York City, with a recent focus on the evolution of public transportation in and around the city. Their visit to the Transit Museum brought history to life as they explored vintage subway cars, passed through historic and modern turnstiles, and hopped aboard a city bus. This immersive experience was the perfect extension of their Social Studies curriculum, deepening their understanding of the city’s rich transportation history.

The heart of 91st Street is always full when our newest alumnae return home! Today, we celebrated a cherished tradition with the Classes of 2021-2024 and their parents at our annual College-Age Alumnae Reunion Luncheon. Wishing our Sacred Heart community a joyous and gratitude-filled Thanksgiving!
