Christopher Nolan on "Following" - Conversations Inside The Criterion Collection 08/26/2014

Great interview with Christopher Nolan on his early days as a guerilla filmmaker. For those that don’t have time to watch the clip, a few important takeaways:

-Nolan never went to film school. He’s self-taught.

-Rather than trying to Ape Hollywood techniques (which won’t measure up) try shooting for achievable professional aesthetic (in Nolan’s case it was grainy black and white stock with hand held camera).

-Nolan learned a lot about filmmaking craft making corporate videos. You learn how to do a lighting setup and make something look good very quickly. There’s hope for the corporate-ys out there!

-With no budget films, guns don’t work very well.

-Try to identify the things that betray the budget to the audience (sound for example) and minimize how much of that the audience sees or hears.

Thank you Werner Herzog, we couldn't agree more:

The best advice I can offer to those heading into the world of film is not to wait for the system to finance your projects and for others to decide your fate. If you can’t afford to make a million-dollar film, raise $10,000 and produce it yourself. That’s all you need to make a feature film these days. Beware of useless, bottom-rung secretarial jobs in film-production companies. Instead, so long as you are able-bodied, head out to where the real world is. Roll up your sleeves and work as a bouncer in a s*x club or a warden in a lunatic asylum or a machine operator in a slaughterhouse. Drive a taxi for six months and you’ll have enough money to make a film. Walk on foot, learn languages and a craft or trade that has nothing to do with cinema. Filmmaking — like great literature — must have experience of life at its foundation. Read Conrad or Hemingway and you can tell how much real life is in those books. A lot of what you see in my films isn’t invention; it’s very much life itself, my own life.

Director Park Chan-wook's iPhone Movie to Hit South Korea Theaters 07/24/2014

This was waaaaaay back in 2011 when a famous South Korean director made a film using only the iphone 4. "Those small cameras have limits. However, instead of complaining, it should be approached in a unique style that is intended for the movie." http://live.wsj.com/video/iphone-movie-to-hit-south-korea-theaters/DE49B759-3638-4E8C-BFD7-3803953BAE26.html #!DE49B759-3638-4E8C-BFD7-3803953BAE26
