Meet Sam! 🌟

Before taking the lead as our Sunset Park Bridge Program Coordinator, Sam was on the front lines helping students master the technical skills needed to earn their commercial driver’s permits. She knows firsthand that a Class B license is more than just a credential—it’s a key to a new life and a stable future.

This Teacher Appreciation Week, we asked Sam what her greatest accomplishment as an educator has been. Her answer reminds us why we do this work: 

“My biggest accomplishment isn’t one thing. When I started teaching Permit Prep, I didn’t quite grasp how life changing the Bridge Program and Red Hook on the Road are. When students started passing tests and expressing their gratitude, I was kind of floored and humbled. I used to teach children who often don’t have the language of gratitude yet, but adults do.
 
It’s amazing when a student reaches out to let me know they’ve since gotten their CDL and have a job. We have school bus drivers come to the FAC Adult Education office to do demos during each cycle, and this cycle a student I had taught in the remote permit prep class was the professional driver giving the demo. It was an amazing, full-circle moment.  

I’ve benefited from free programs like the ones FAC and BWI offer, like the ASAP program through CUNY (look it up and pass it on!!). Without them, I wouldn’t have gone to college, and I certainly would not have had this job. There is no richer feeling to be able to give that back to folks”.
