Bank Street School for Children

The Bank Street School for Children is an independent, gender-inclusive preschool through 8th-grade school in New York City.

Bank Street is recognized as the gold standard in progressive education. The two main programmatic divisions are the School for Children, which educates children from preschool through grade 8, and the Graduate School, which prepares adults to teach and work in schools all over the world. Teachers with Bank Street degrees are in demand. The combination of the Graduate School and the School for Children in the same setting creates a unique synergy between children and teachers. As New York City's premier progressive school, we are focused on all aspects of children’s development. Our excellent curriculum is dynamic, age-appropriate, responsive to children’s needs and relevant to their lives. Our teachers are well-trained (65% hold a Master’s degree from our Graduate School) and thoroughly knowledgeable about children and child development. They are experts in the field and our greatest resource. Hallmarks of our mission, we work hard to deliberately create a community that is broadly inclusive and reflects the diversity of our multicultural society. Our faculty specialize in nurturing the intellectual, social and emotional lives of young children and early adolescents. By 8th grade, children are developmentally ready for the change to high school. We take pride in our high school admissions process, which ensures that our graduates attend the high school that is the best fit for each student.

Our first full week of school included a change of scenery for our 10/11s and 11/12s!

Students headed to Camp Speers for an overnight trip filled with climbing, canoeing, hiking, archery, and plenty of opportunities to try something new together.

Needless to say, it was a memorable start to the Upper School year. 💙

The Children’s Book Committee at Bank Street College of Education has released the 2026 Best Children’s Books of the Year list, honoring the most outstanding works published in 2025 for ages 0-14+!

Behind this list is an incredible team of librarians, teachers, psychologists, and publishing professionals who read nearly 6,000 books a year seeking books that delight, inform, inspire, and reflect the full range of young people’s lived experiences.

Happy Last Day of School, Bank Street!

We are looking back at this year with gratitude for the friendships that have grown, the deep and joyful learning, and the lasting memories we made. This spring, we also officially welcomed our new Head of School, Melanie Bryon!

From the Lincoln Center Neighborhood Study and Central Park Zoo trip to the Sock Jump, Rock Band Rehearsals, Field Days, and baby chicks visiting the classroom, this year was packed with absolute magic.💫
