Learning in action at ETM!

At our professional development session last week, ETM music educators came together to reflect on their early classroom experiences, strengthen their teaching practice, and share strategies for supporting student growth.

A highlight of the day was joining Dr. Tyrone Clinton Jr. for an up-close look at choral teaching in action as he led a rehearsal with 5th graders from an ETM partner school in the Bronx. After observing the beginning ensemble, teachers joined Dr. Clinton to unpack the rehearsal and explore practical techniques they can bring to their own classrooms.

The day also featured hands-on sessions on choral repertoire, vocal technique for modern band, supporting Multilingual Learners (led by our partners at ETM-Colorado!), and reflecting on the first weeks of teaching.

We’re grateful to our guest facilitators and the ETM team for equipping our music educators with fresh ideas and practical strategies to help every student thrive! 🎵

We’re excited to welcome Emily Buckley to the Education Through Music team as an Instructional Supervisor! 🎶

Emily brings over eight years of experience teaching general music and chorus in public schools, along with expertise in curriculum design, educator mentorship, and inclusive music education. She holds degrees in Music Education from SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music and Queens College.

Passionate about accessible and culturally responsive music education, Emily is committed to fostering identity, community, and belonging through music. At ETM, she’ll draw on her classroom and leadership experience to support music teachers in building impactful programs that inspire artistic expression and connection.

🎹 Just two weeks until Richard Atkins takes the stage at Carnegie Hall!

On October 24, acclaimed pianist and composer Richard Atkins presents Pianistically Speaking, an evening of music spanning Chopin, Beethoven, Debussy, cinematic favorites, ragtime and light jazz, alongside his own original compositions.

The evening will also feature Jason Afovi, a recent student at ETM partner school P.S. 236 Langston Hughes in the Bronx, joining Richard for a special performance on the Carnegie Hall stage. We’re thrilled to celebrate Jason’s journey and the power of music education to build skills, confidence, and new possibilities for students.

A portion of proceeds from the evening will benefit Education Through Music.

What a day! ⛳️

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Wykagyl Country Club for ETM’s 2026 Golf Outing. Together, we raised over $160,000 to support high-quality music education at under-resourced schools across New York City.

A special thank you to ETM Board member Jerry Schumm, whose leadership and dedication make this event possible year after year. We’re also grateful to Jonathan Ratner, this year’s honoree, for his support of ETM and our mission.

🎶 ETM is heading to NAfME 2026!

Jameon Moss, ETM's Director of Programs, and Stephanie Nantell, ETM's Chief Programs & Partnerships Officer, will represent Education Through Music at the National Association for Music Education 2026 Biennial Music Research and Teacher Education Conference in Long Beach, California.

Jameon and Stephanie will lead “Artful PD: Designing High-Impact Professional Development Workshops,” sharing ETM’s research-informed approach to designing engaging, effective professional learning for music educators.

We’re excited to share ETM’s work with colleagues from across the field and contribute to the conversation around strengthening music education and supporting the educators who make it possible.

For students, music can mean so many things - a way to express themselves, connect with others, build confidence, find joy, and make their voices heard.
