A message from Chancellor Samuels: I was so excited to welcome everyone and to kick off the 2026–27 school year together! I hope everyone was able to rest, recharge, and make lasting memories with family and friends this summer.

The first day of school always brings new beginnings, opportunities, and possibilities, which makes it one of my favorite times of the year. I’ve experienced many first days as a student, teacher, principal, and parent, and now, this past week was my “first” first day as Chancellor.

I hope this school year is filled with many special moments for our students, faculty, and caregivers. I look forward to all that we will learn, create, and accomplish together in the year ahead.

Thank you to everyone who joined me during my five-borough tour to begin the new school year!

Our 2026-27 NYC Teaching Fellows are ready to hit the classroom this September! We caught up with members of the new cohort to hear what they're excited about for the upcoming school year.

Since 2000, the NYC Teaching Fellows program has prepared thousands of teachers for high-need New York City Public Schools and subject areas, including our own Chancellor!

Fellows will complete their seven-week training intensive this month and start teaching on the . They will also earn a subsidized master's degree and certification over the next 2-3 years.

Wishing all of our Fellows and first-year teachers an amazing first year!

This week, we welcomed thousands of new teachers to NYCPS for !

Our kickoff event marked the beginning of their teaching journey as we connect new educators with the resources needed to succeed in the classroom and throughout their careers at New York City Public Schools.

Throughout the week, newly hired teachers participate in district-based orientation sessions focused on district priorities, curriculum, instructional supports, and community building. These sessions are built to support our newly hired teachers to build connections and prepare for success in their classrooms throughout their first year and beyond.

Thank you to our Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality team for putting this special event and week together!

And thank you to our community leaders and labor partners, including UFT - United Federation of Teachers President Mulgrew for joining us.

Special thank you to our student panel from High School for Law, Advocacy and Community Justice, our student band performance from Brooklyn United, our Big Apple Award Winner guest speaker, and our teacher MCs for celebrating with us!
