The Black Alumni of Pratt The Black Alumni of Pratt:: Celebrating, organizing and supporting Pratt students & Alumni.

BAP was founded 1990 to identify and advance scholastic and professional opportunities for Pratt students and alumni of African and Latinx descent. BAP's objective is to advance those opportunities by sharing resources, cultivating an influential network and utilizing professional contacts. Overall, BAP helps promote an understanding of how diversity can better society at large. BAP's mission reflects a guiding principal of Pratt Institute's founder Charles Pratt, who said in 1887, "I want to found a school that shall give everybody a chance," And, reflecting Charles Pratt's visionary spirit, within the top 5 art and design school in the United States and Canada, only Pratt Institute has the distinction of having the first Black alumni association.

The Black Student Union (BSU) brought joy to the campus at its BBQ on Saturday with line dancing, corn hole, board, card and table games, fantastic food and a fabulous music playlist. A birthday and an election win were also celebrated.

Congratulations are in order for Mekhi DeLeon, senior History of Art & Design major/ Museum & Gallery practices minor.

Mekhi was recently awarded the Margaret T.G.Burroughs and Charles H.Wright Fellowship by the Association of African American Museums (AAAM).

Annually the AAAM recognizes two emerging museum professionals demonstrating excellence and interpretation and preservation of African American African Diaspora history, art, and culture.

The fellowship honors the founders of the AAAM. In late 1960s, Dr. Margaret Burroughs, founder at the Sabb Museum in Chicago, and Dr. Charles H Wright, of the museums of African-American history in Detroit, initiated a series of conferences for black museums.

AN OPPORTUNITY!

Writer and activist Kevin Powell will serve as Pratt Institute’s Poet-and-Scholar-in-Residence during the Fall 2026 semester. Through four interactive, two-hour workshops, Pratt students will work directly with Powell and peers from across the Institute. Students will explore how creative expression connects with democracy, leadership, identity, voting, civic engagement, and community participation.

Each workshop will combine dialogue, reflection, creative exploration, and hands-on work. Students will have dedicated time to create or develop written, visual, performance-based, or other creative work connected to the session’s theme.

No previous workshop, writing, performance, or artistic experience is required. The series is open to Pratt students from every school, department, major, and year.

Congratulations are in order for alumnus Robert “Rob” Redding, MFA Painting and Drawing ‘22

Rob has been appointed Visiting Lecturer of Communication at Colorado Mesa University (CMU) for the 2026–2027 academic year., bringing Marking over two decades of trailblazing broadcast, print, and digital journalism leadership, alongside a formidable legacy as a national champion debate competitor and coach, to the university community.

At CMU, Redding will instruct core speechmaking, interpersonal communication, and essential communication courses. In addition to his instructional duties, he will help with the total revitalization of the university’s competitive debate program.

MEET THE 2026 BAP PRECOLLEGE SCHOLARS: Darwin Chavarria Mendez, Brianna Nix, and Okalani Logan! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

As recipients of the The Black Alumni of Pratt (BAP) Summer PreCollege Scholarship, Okalani Logan, Darwin Chavarria Mendez, and Brianna Nix lived on campus and took intensive, credit-bearing courses alongside students from around the world. Their work was featured in the annual PreCollege exhibition, marking the culmination of a summer of experimentation and exchange.

During their time on campus, the scholars experienced the rhythms of college life: attending studio classes, navigating the neighborhood, visiting cultural institutions throughout the city, and building friendships with peers and roommates.
