With profound sadness and tender hearts, the leaders & community of Tibet House US & Menla shared the sad news that our beloved founder, teacher, and spiritual director, Robert A.F. Thurman, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning at his home in Woodstock, New York.
Bob dedicated his life to the study, practice, and sharing of Tibetan Buddhism, bringing wisdom, compassion, and insight to countless people around the world. Through his tireless efforts as a scholar, author, educator, activist, and founder of Tibet House US and Menla, he helped preserve the precious teachings of Tibet and inspired generations to cultivate wisdom and compassionate action. He was the Je Tsongkhapa Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at Columbia University, before retiring in 2019.
With love and gratitude for Bob, I’m sending deepest condolences to Nena, Uma & Maya and every student whose heart breaks at this time of great loss.
In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the days following the passing of a great practitioner are regarded as a deeply meaningful and sacred period. We invite everyone to hold Bob in your hearts through prayer, mantra recitation, meditation, and aspirations for his swift and auspicious journey through the bardo, and for his continued compassionate activity for the benefit of all beings.
Thank you for holding Bob, his family, and the entire Menla and Tibet House US community in your hearts during this time.
May all the merit generated by his extraordinary life ripple endlessly throughout the world for the benefit of all sentient beings.
