Plenary III - Intimacy and Solitudes: Adults, Couples and the Languages of Relationships

Our third plenary will address the solitudes within intimate partnerships. Dr. Galit Atlas and Dr. Bradley Jones will illustrate the challenges of making contact with early dissociated self experiences, hidden in solitude, to illuminate unresolved losses and reclaim a sense of aliveness. This presentation will invite us to look at relationships not as an antidote to solitude, but as a vessel for embracing them. Discussant Dayna Sharp, LCSW, will synthesize the clinical material, and Heather Ferguson, LCSW, will moderate what will be a captivating discussion. Attendees can hope to gain a better perspective on the role solitude plays in adult relationships and couples therapy.

Plenary II-The Adolescent’s Search for Identity and Transformation

Our second plenary will take us through the many solitudes of adolescence.
Dr. Jackie Gotthold, Dr. Gianni Nebbiosi and Rosalind Kindler, RP will address the unique struggles of solitude and belonging that emerge during this time of development. The presenters will look at adolescence not from the perspective of chronology, but rather as a state of mind. They will emphasize the multiplicity of new experiences that emerge during this time, with the self, with the other and in groups, and how solitude is a necessary vessel for this emergence.
Amy Joelson, LCSW will moderate what will be an enlivening presentation. Attendees will gain a better understanding of the vital process of finding oneself during this period of development and how it impacts how they arrive in adulthood.

Roger Frie will be this year’s keynote speaker.

Dr. Frie will kick off the conference by inviting attendees to consider psychoanalytic practice under the weight of injustice that is enveloping our world and our work. He will address how injustice perpetuates solitude and how, in the consulting room, the “ethic of listening” clashes with silencing, denial and ignorance. How does this enact a failure to witness? And can it be overcome?
