AN URGENT MESSAGE TO ALL CCS MEMBERS AND FRIENDS: We need your help to keep the CCS Food Share program alive. Our goal is modest: to raise $25,000 by September 1st.
Cuba is currently trapped in a historic economic crisis. Severe food inflation and a vanishing supply network have left the island’s vulnerable populations in jeopardy. To see food insecurity in Cuba, which always provided the basic food necessities at little or no cost, is heartbreaking.
If you have close friends in Cuba, you are probably already helping them with money or food supplies and the best way is to support them directly (CCS can help you navigate getting food packages directly to friends and relatives).
But what about those without relatives or friends abroad? Or elderly Cubans who have no one left to call? Or those who live alone with infirmities? How do they buy life’s necessities? For the first time in more than 50 years, we are seeing the elderly alone on the streets of Cuba, or in wheelchairs or walkers, a neighbor equally poor but fit, helping them to look for needed food and medicine.
This is the devastating reality of the current crisis, exacerbated by Trump’s cruel oil blockade. Seniors living alone, families with small children, those without anyone abroad to send help, are in desperate need. Local salaries and pensions are almost worthless because of triple digit informal market inflation. These Cubans are dependent on collective solidarity.
We are asking you to help us raise $25,000 for our Food Share program by September 1st. CCS Food Share operates as a direct network that buys food from independent farms in Cuba, as well as local markets, to deliver to the homes of the neediest. Prices are skyrocketing but still, a gift of $250 can provide a family of four or five a month of farm-fresh produce, meat and dairy. $125-$150 can feed 2-3 people for a month. And as we know, Cubans share what little they have with many others. We’ve attached a few typical food baskets so that you can see what we hope to deliver to those most in need.
Please consider helping us build these small bridges of survival. Support your loved ones directly if you can—and help us catch those who have fallen through the cracks of a once proud and thriving country. Cuba is now subject to Trump’s and Marco Rubio’s brutality. They are trying to starve the Cuban people into submission. We cannot allow that.
