I did a recording with Brian Charette, Paul Bollenback, with George Coleman Sr. as a Special guest, which came out last month. It was a typical George Sr. affair, and even though it was Brian's date, George Sr. called all of the tunes In fact, he would just start playing, and we would have to figure it out while the tape was rolling. Which wouldn't be that difficult if we at least knew the key and he didn't create his own on the spot arrangements. Coupled with some drama on the date and after its miracle, it even came out! George Coleman Sr. is old school, no rehearsals, no tune list, one take, no original keys or time signatures, just play the music and shut the F up! 😂😂😂

Honored. Grateful. Inspired.
As a Jazz Legacies Fellow, I am deeply moved to be part of this incredible initiative, made possible by the Mellon Foundation and the Jazz Foundation of America.
https://www.mellon.org/.../mellon-launches-35-million...
This fellowship not only recognizes the contributions of jazz artists but also ensures that our stories, music, and legacies will be preserved for generations to come.
With a lifetime achievement award, an unrestricted grant, and personalized support, this program is a testament to the power of jazz and its lasting impact.
I've never been one to covet awards or worry about what others think of me I've simply dedicated myself to giving the best performances and mentoring as many young people as I can. Even at almost 90, I have no plans to stop and now with this award, I can even present some new projects I've always wanted to do.
I am excited to share this journey with my fellow artists and congratulate all of the winners as it is well deserved!
—stay tuned for my 90th birthday performance at Dizzy's on March 13th & 14th! https://ticketing.jazz.org/18226/18227

I went on opening night Tuesday and Sunday of Branford Marsalis week-long run at SMOKE Jazz Club. I think it was the first smaller club I'd seen him perform since I saw him at the Village Vanguard maybe 20+ years ago!. It was absolutely spectacular! Great playing by everyone and the natural musical interaction that you only hear in a working band was completely on display. On Sunday I stood in the back with Jeff "Tain" Watts, Herlin Riley, Robert Hurst and we were all hollering and dancing to the music of the last set which was swinging, fun and soulful! It's just a great reminder for me when I'm not working to go out a bit more and soak up and feed on that great musical energy we are lucky to often find in New York! Have a great week peeps!

I was hoping like many people that the news of the great Russell Malone's passing was untrue and it definitely breaks my heart that we will not see him again. Russell really was a rare person who would always come out to support his fellow musicians whenever he was not working. He was funny, and an absolutely brilliant musician but he was most importantly he was a great guy who would often reach out to you just to say hi or show up to your gig unannounced to support you. George Coleman Sr. is short on praise but loved the way Russell played and always enjoyed speaking with him and playing with him as did I. Rest in Power and Peace brother Russell you will surely be missed. Condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Russell Malone.

George Coleman Sr. is heading to Europe to accept an award and do a bot of playing. He hasn't traveled to Europe in over 20+ years so this is a pretty special trip. I went to wish him and his manager Eli Windau a safe trip!

Looking to forward to a nice weekend concert at https://www.unclecheef.com/calendar/wayne-escoffery in Brewster, NY with my main man Wayne Escoffery! Anybody who counts Jackie McLean and George Coleman Sr. as his mentors has some serious pedigree! With us will be another gentleman I've had many pleasures playing, Pat Bianchi on organ and a first time musical acquaintance Avi Rothbard on guitar. Stop by because it will be swinging!
