If you had to describe what a good public school should be, what would you say?

EdPWR took that question seriously and came up with answers: the Ten Commitments to improve public schools. Things like: every child is safe and known. Every child is taught how to read. Every child is taught by a great teacher. Every school is funded fairly, no matter the zip code.

Parents are getting a clearer picture of their child’s academic reality.

73% say their child receives mostly As and Bs, down from 84% in 2022.

Parents’ views of grade-level performance are also shifting:
📖 Reading: 93% → 88%
➗ Math: 92% → 83%

Nearly two-thirds of states are overlooking one of their strongest tools for addressing teacher shortages: pay.

A new National Council on Teacher Quality analysis finds that most states offer no additional pay to attract and retain teachers in hard-to-staff schools and subjects. That means most teachers have no incentive to take on crucial roles in high-need schools or fill roles in shortage subject areas like special education, math, and science.

94% of teachers support the use of high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) in the classroom.

That's about as close to consensus as our latest data gets. But only 47% say these materials help all students master academic standards, and that number drops even more for struggling learners.

What varies is implementation: teachers whose districts roll out HQIM well report far more confidence in their materials than teachers whose districts fall short.

Belief in HQIM isn't the problem. Follow-through is.
