For a long time living in New York in America, I would hear people say, “That’s classy,” or “That was a classless act.” But those phrases quietly assume that dignity belongs to some higher social class, and that bad behavior belongs to a lower one. In reality, behavior has nothing to do with class or hierarchy. You can meet people at the very top or the very bottom of society who act with equal dignity—or equal disregard.

It’s worthwhile to reconsider such expressions. Instead of calling someone classy or classless, we might simply say what we mean: inconsiderate, respectful, ignorant, or unkind.
