Every piece on the board is unique- that's what makes this game so important. Similar to our students who take on this challenge, they are all unique thinkers/learners- which makes them more powerful than they believe.

I believe in the game of Chess so much that I can guarantee your child's thinking and behavior will shift within the first few introductions to this game!
As a Teacher (25 years), Coach and Player, I figured out by using the game of chess blended with life skill development, the two together creates a well-balanced, focused student who is in control of all faculties of decision making and critical thinking- My previous students/ members, who were considered the "trouble makers" in their class rooms, were sent to me when classroom teachers were at their wits end with behavior problems. I served as a detention room sub; I introduced Chess to group of inner-city Brooklyn students who had never played nor played competitively. Soon ALL were able to control impulses/emotions (disruptive behavior in class) almost immediately. Their grades increased and their attitudes toward their futures flourished. The first ever chess team in the history of their school. And the only one to Win a first-place trophy but not before placing 2nd and 3rd place consistently.
I said all of this to testify to the importance of this game- not too often played. Yet we as Teachers and Mentors must continue to step outside of the box and reassess how to educate, motivate and inspire this new generation of thinkers. Chess is the answer.
