Checkout these beautiful shots from Baoling Pu’s study away at NYU Prague! 📸

@‌kristen_pu is a senior majoring in Media, Culture, and Communication at Steinhardt, and says her study away adventures in both NYU Shanghai and NYU Prague left an indelible mark on her academic and personal journey. Here’s why she believes studying away is an invaluable experience:

"These study away opportunities not only broaden your academic horizons but also foster global citizenship. At least they made me realize that I want to become a global citizen in the future! 🌍 Also, living and studying in a different environment challenges your comfort zone, pushing you to adapt and grow both personally and academically.

Go on as many Study Aways as you can! Take advantage of NYU Resources! You can spend a short summer studying away in a small city like Prague or an entire semester studying in a big city like Shanghai. Both periods are just the right length to explore the cities deeply without feeling rushed.

If you get the opportunity to study away, you should start your preparations well in advance. Different destinations have varied requirements, from visas to prerequisites. Don't wait until the last minute! By the way, please document your study away experience and journey! Keep a journal or blog. This will be an experience you will never forget in your life! It's a wonderful way to reflect and cherish memories!"

So what are you waiting for? 👀 Start looking into your study away journey now!

Did you know that at NYU, students have the opportunity to study away multiple times throughout their academic journey?🫣😮

Meet @‌evaboyes a Senior majoring in Environmental studies and minoring in Business and Hellenic studies who did just that and studied away in Berlin, Florence and Athens.

Here’s her advice for students wanting to study away:

"The thing that most helped me while studying abroad was staying flexible, and not creating specific expectations for your time there. Life is unpredictable, especially while studying in a foreign country, and so accepting that allows you to appreciate all the great things that come along with studying and living in a new country. Having studied abroad three times I know that every country, campus and experience is completely different, and by going in without comparing one experience to another I was able to appreciate each semester fully. I would also urge students to step outside of their comfort zone and work with their office of student life to find local events and activities they can attend. Going to local art festivals, markets, and concerts were some of my favorite memories abroad, and helped me connect with the local community even if my language skills were not 100%."

Looking for the ultimate chance to explore Europe?✈

Introducing @‌evelyn_salvia, a French minor who seized the opportunity to study abroad at our NYU Paris campus, embarking on an incredible journey across 13 countries throughout Europe!

“My study away experience introduced me to a community of hundreds of new students at NYU, gave me the opportunity to develop my French speaking skills as a student with a French Minor. The experience and perspective that I gained, being hours away from home with people I've never met, a language I didn't natively speak and a culture that was completely new, came from an extremely underrated learning environment. Thankfully, as NYU students, we experience this shock the second we step on campus, so we have the advantage of quickly acclimating to studying away! As a result, my friends and I got comfortable with independence and blossomed crucial developmental skills.”

She says some her most transformative expereinces were learning to travel alone, book flights/ hotels, create itineraries, stick to a budget, make friends from different countries/ traditions/ languages and explore new places on her own. “My 5 months in Paris taught me more about maturing in a big city than I could have ever expected."

We are sending you a virtual hug💜💜

As your study abroad journey draws to a close, you may find yourself grappling with the bittersweet reality of saying goodbye once again. It's a whirlwind of emotions as you reflect on the friendships formed, the memories made, and the city that has become a second home. During this pivotal moment, it's essential to embrace the full spectrum of feelings and treat yourself with kindness.

Here are some thoughtful ways to navigate this farewell phase:

Plan a Farewell Gathering: Gather your study abroad companions, classmates, and even professors for a heartfelt farewell get-together.

Write Personalized Notes: Take a moment to express your gratitude and affection by writing personalized goodbye notes to those who have made a difference in your journey.

Capture Memories: Preserve the magic of your study abroad experience by creating a tangible memento of your favorite moments. Whether it's a photo album or a digital collage, share it with your loved ones as a testament to the unforgettable memories you've created together.

Exchange Contact Information: Stay connected with your study abroad circle by exchanging contact information. Whether it's through social media platforms, email, or phone numbers, maintaining these connections can keep the flame of friendship alive across borders.

Plan Reunions: While goodbyes may be inevitable for now, set the stage for future reunions or adventures together. Having something to look forward to can ease the sting of parting and keep the bond strong despite the distance.

Express Gratitude: Take a moment to express heartfelt gratitude to your host family, professors, and anyone else who has played a part in your study abroad experience.

Stay Positive: As you navigate the waves of emotion, focus on the growth, and transformation you've undergone during your time abroad.

Remember, while goodbyes may mark the end of one chapter, they also signify the beginning of new adventures and opportunities. Embrace the journey ahead with an open heart and a spirit of gratitude. It is definitely a farewell, not a goodbye. ✨🌍

As the study away semester comes to an end are you wondering what to do with the items you can't or don't want to take back home? This Earth Month we want to inspire you to think of sustainable ways to give a second life to your belongings! 💚Here’s some of our suggestions:

Donate to Local Charities: Bring anything you don’t need or bought things specifically for your study away site you can’t bring home. Give your gently used clothes, books, and electronics a second life by donating them to local shelters, libraries, or schools.

Recycle Right: Do you have things that aren’t reusable or in too poor of a condition to pass on, make sure to recycle right!

Sell or Swap: Join your Local Buy/Sell page or post things you can giveaway in a group chat to students staying away longer or incoming.

🌟 Let’s all do our part this Earth Month by reducing our waste footprint! Do you have any other suggestions? Tag your friends to spread the word and challenge them to declutter sustainably! 💚

Meet Natasha Cicogna, an Individualized Major with a passion for Language, Culture, and Migration. During her time studying away at NYU Buenos Aires, Natasha involved herself in Spanish classes and says she accelerated her personal growth. 🌍✨

Reflecting on her time abroad, Natasha shared, “My study abroad experience was extremely immersive and pushed me to grow at a much faster rate than I was used to.

When I was in BA I was in mainly Spanish classes and also participated in an internship, so I was fully immersed. I felt like I learned a lot about Argentine culture through my classes while still being challenged academically. I thoroughly enjoyed my homestay experience and it was one of the best parts of my semester abroad. I was really able to feel integrated into the city and I learned a lot from my host mom. I would suggest NYU BA to students who really want to connect with a smaller NYU community while learning about your host country and improving your language skills. “

🌍 Meet Antonio, an NYU Senior and one of our global ambassadors! ✈️ With us, he explored two incredible destinations🌟

Here’s what he had to say: “London and Madrid exceeded my expectations. Living in a different city for 4 months is a great life experience, and was very important in my process of growth. I had the face the language barrier in Madrid and was more incentivized to learn Spanish in order to be able to communicate with others and had to socially interact with new friends, as my NY community was not there with me. “

He says, “Most importantly, I had the chance to travel back to my home country (Italy) three times throughout the semester, other than other trips around Europe. Spain and London’s strategic location makes it easy to travel with quick flights and makes it possible with a very limited budget.”

Ready to embark on your own life-changing adventure? Applications for Spring 2025 are now open! Don't miss out on the chance to explore the world like Antonio. 🌍 Apply now! https://www.nyu.edu/academics/studying-abroad/upperclassmen-semester-academic-year-study-away/applying.html

Ramadan Mubarak to all our students observing this holy month! 🌙

In light of the season, we asked Global Ambassador Mary Jeng who studied away in Paris and observed Ramadan last year her tips for our students during this year's Ramadan.

“Experiencing Ramadan whilst studying abroad last year wasn't as challenging as I had anticipated, however, there were a few hurdles that I had to overcome during the month in order to make the time as easy as possible. NYU Paris also did a great job in accommodating the students who were fasting, and my professors were very understanding during this time, especially when I needed to extend a deadline for an assignment or a project.”

For students thinking about going or currently away here are her tips!

1. Be realistic and give yourself some grace; you’re in a new country and far from home. If Ramadan doesn’t ‘feel’ the same as previous years that’s okay. Give yourself some time to set out your intentions for the month and be mindful of how that may look like in a new environment.

2. Do not actively isolate yourself during this time. Try and connect with the people who will also be fasting during this month. If you feel comfortable enough, perhaps try and find a community of Muslims outside of NYU; this could be as simple as going to a local mosque. No matter how you may be feeling, make sure that you maintain that line of communication with your friends and family during this time as this is essential.

3. Establish a routine! Make sure you know exactly what you need to do to make the most out of your days and to also make sure that you are prioritizing the things you need to.

4. Do not overwork yourself and do not be afraid to talk to your professors. If you feel as if you need an extension for an assignment or any other type of accommodation feel free to email or talk to your professors in person.

Remember, this experience abroad during Ramadan is a unique opportunity for personal and academic growth. Embrace the diversity of cultures and experiences around you, and may this month bring you peace, blessings, and success in your studies. Ramadan Mubarak! 📚✨

🌍 Meet Ainsley, one of our Global Ambassadors who studied away at NYU Berlin and NYU Florence, where she delved into Sociology, Urban Design & Architecture Studies. 🎓

Hear what she had to say about Berlin and how it stole her heart!
"In terms of my experience living in Berlin, I loved living there. The public transit, free through NYU, made traveling to class and visiting new neighborhoods seamless; I was happily surprised at the diversity of excellent food -- Chinese, German, Vietnamese, Georgian, Turkish, and Korean -- I found in the city. Classes on Berlin's architecture and art also helped me understand the city's urban fabric, while my German language class offered cultural insights far beyond simple language instruction. Compared to New York, the cost of living was substantially cheaper, so I could eat out, visit museums (with a museum pass also covered by NYU), and go thrift shopping a lot more than I could back home."

She says, however, the real stand out was the people. "The people I met in Berlin also greatly shaped my experience. Learning from professors who had deep cultural knowledge of German, meeting peers who studied subjects quite different from my own, and forming friendships with locals all helped me better immerse myself in Berlin's culture!"

Don't miss out! Applications for NYU Berlin Fall 2024 semester are still open. Link in bio. ✈️ 🌟
