🩸A global movement is building to move menstrual health from the margins to the mainstream.

Across regions and sectors, governments, UN agencies, civil society, youth advocates and partners are coming together around a new Shared Agenda for Action on Menstrual Health.

Why? Because menstrual health is not only about hygiene products. It is deeply connected to education, health, WASH, gender equality, economic participation, climate resilience and human dignity. Yet despite progress, over 500 million women and girls still face unmet menstrual health needs worldwide.

The Shared Agenda aims to:
🔹 Increase political prioritization and investment
🔹 Strengthen accountability and evidence
🔹 Break stigma and harmful social norms
🔹 Elevate adolescent and youth voices
🔹 Build stronger cross-sector collaboration

This is a collective effort — and consultations are now underway across regions. We invite governments, practitioners, youth leaders, researchers, civil society and partners to help shape the agenda and drive meaningful action.

Menstrual health is not a side issue. It is a development priority.

🌍 What do you think is the most strategic infrastructure Africa can build for its future?

In her interview for the Africa Dialogue Series, Laila Omar Gad, Head of the UNICEF AU & EU Liaison Office, reflected on the central role of children and youth in Africa’s development journey:

“The most strategic infrastructure Africa can build for its future may not only be roads or energy systems, but healthy, educated and resilient children — and this starts with Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.”

Safe water and sanitation underpin:
🌾 Food security
⚡ Energy resilience
📚 Education
🕊️ Peace and stability
🌍 Climate resilience
👧🏾 Human capital and youth opportunity As Sub-theme 3 of the Africa Dialogue Series 2026 begins, we are invited to think more broadly about the role of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in shaping Africa’s future.
