There is something unusual about Philadelphia’s commendation. 📖

Jesus does not pretend this congregation possesses unlimited strength. Its limitation is stated plainly—and then its faithfulness is stated just as plainly.

It had kept His word. It had not denied His name. It had persevered.

That distinction is easy to miss. 🔎 The message does not teach us that faithful people never experience weakness. Philadelphia shows those two realities existing together.

And that makes Christ’s next words especially meaningful: “Hold fast what you have.”

Philadelphia was not praised because it looked powerful. 📖

In Revelation 3, Jesus acknowledges that this church has “a little strength.” Yet the description does not end with its limitations. The church had kept His word and had not denied His name.

That contrast matters. 🔎 Strength and faithfulness are not the same thing.

Philadelphia’s story asks us to look beyond visible size, influence, or power and notice something much harder to measure: perseverance.

This week, we are exploring the city, the church, the “open door,” and why Philadelphia became such a meaningful part of the story of the Seven Churches. 📍

Happy Sabbath from Sardis. 🌿

This landscape carries more than one chapter of history.

Sardis was the capital associated with Croesus and the wealth of ancient Lydia. Centuries later, Christians living here received one of Revelation’s seven messages to the churches of Asia. 📖

That means one location connects two very different stories: the rise and fall of earthly power, and a Christian community being called to spiritual watchfulness.

As this week’s journey closes, perhaps that is the detail worth carrying with us: places change, kingdoms change and reputations change—but every generation still has to decide what it will remember and hold fast to.

Archaeology gives this ancient story a physical dimension. 🔎

Excavations at Sardis have uncovered destruction associated with the Persian conquest, including burned material, weapons and casualties. One excavated area produced more than two dozen bronze arrowheads in a passageway. 📜

So the fall of Sardis is not merely a dramatic literary story handed down by Herodotus. Archaeological evidence confirms violent destruction at the city in the period of Cyrus's conquest, even though archaeology cannot verify every narrative detail Herodotus records.

That distinction matters. Good history gets more interesting when we separate what the text tells us from what the ground can independently show us.

“Be watchful.”

Those words carry particular weight in Sardis. 📖

Long before the Christian church existed there, the city's formidable acropolis had been captured after an attacker found a way up terrain considered effectively inaccessible.

Revelation later addresses a completely different problem—a spiritual one. The church is called to wakefulness, remembrance, repentance and perseverance. The biblical text does not explicitly connect that command to the earlier Persian conquest, so we should not turn the parallel into something Scripture itself claims. 📜

But knowing Sardis's history gives us a remarkable setting in which to hear the warning.

Sardis had lived with reputation for centuries. 📜

A wealthy capital. A formidable acropolis. A city whose position seemed extraordinarily difficult to attack.
Then it fell.

Much later, Revelation addressed a Christian community in Sardis using the language of reputation again—this time describing a church known as alive while confronting a very different spiritual reality. 📖

We should be careful not to claim that Revelation explicitly explains the city's military history; the text does not say that. But the historical resonance is difficult to miss.

Reputation tells us what something appears to be. Reality tells us what it actually is. 🔎

Look at the landscape before you look at the ruins. 📍

That height is part of the Sardis story.

The city’s acropolis occupied extraordinarily steep terrain above the plain, helping explain why ancient Sardis acquired such a formidable reputation. From photographs alone, you begin to understand why an attacker climbing toward these heights would face a serious challenge. 🗺️

But here is the detail worth remembering: according to Herodotus, the section eventually climbed by the Persians was considered so unlikely to be attacked that no guard had been placed there.

Sometimes geography explains history better than another paragraph can. 🔎

To understand the church of Sardis, it helps to understand the city first. 🗺️

Sardis knew what strength looked like: strategic geography, political power, military history, and extraordinary wealth. Lydia was also central to the early development of coinage, with some of the world's earliest coins produced there. 🪙

Yet the city’s defenses did not make it untouchable.

That history creates an intriguing backdrop to Revelation 3, where the church in Sardis receives a warning centered on watchfulness, spiritual reality and what remained. 📖

Some cities were protected by walls. Sardis seemed protected by geography itself. 📍

As the capital of Lydia, it occupied a position whose steep acropolis helped give it a formidable reputation. But reputation was not enough. Cyrus's Persian forces eventually captured the city, ending the Lydian kingdom of Croesus. 📜

Centuries later, Sardis appears again in a very different story: Revelation's message to the Christian church there warns a community with a reputation for life to wake up and strengthen what remained.

Same city. A very different kind of danger. 🔎

Happy Sabbath from Thyatira. 📖🌿

All week, we have followed a message filled with contrasts:

Love and compromise. 🤍
Service and apostasy.
Patience and pressure.
Earthly authority and Christ’s authority. 👑

But Jesus does not end His message to Thyatira with Jezebel.

He ends with a promise to the one who overcomes. ✨

That ending matters.

The faithful do not need to compromise simply because another power appears stronger in the moment. Revelation directs their attention toward the One whose authority extends beyond every earthly kingdom. 🙏

This Sabbath, may Thyatira leave us with one simple thought:
Hold fast. Christ still has the final word. 🤲
