At age 55, Ynes Mexía was told it was too late to start a career in science. She proved the world wrong—leading expeditions across the Americas to collect over 150,000 plant specimens and discover 500+ new species, expanding our understanding of biodiversity forever.

Past meets present! Last week, our current Head of School, Maren Holmen, had a wonderful time catching up with former Heads of School, George Higgins and Laura Lustbader.

This gathering carries on a cherished tradition: George and Laura used to share an annual dinner with Dottie Marchetti, who served as Head of School before Laura, and it has always served as a way to remember the common values all of our Heads maintain during their tenures. Can't wait for the next one!

We are thrilled to announce that Beekman student Cecily has been named a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program!

Commended Students represent the top 50,000 scorers out of more than 1.3 million students nationwide who entered the competition by taking the PSAT/NMSQT. This honor recognizes Cecily’s outstanding academic potential, hard work, and commitment to learning.

A huge thank you to the senior parents who attended College Night last night, hosted by Ada, our Director of College Guidance. We had a great discussion about applications, financial aid, and key dates for the year ahead. The highlight of the evening was a Q&A with an alumni parent, who offered fantastic firsthand insight into supporting a senior.

Yesterday, September 22, was officially the Autumnal Equinox—the first day of fall! But what’s actually going on out in space when autumn hits?

Our Astronomy class is currently breaking down the science behind the season. Yesterday, Earth hit that special spot in its orbit where its 23.5-degree tilt was aligned side-on to the Sun. That meant direct sunlight hit straight at the equator, giving almost every corner of the planet an equal 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night.

From tracking the path of the sun to mapping out the sky, our elective students are discovering how planetary motion shapes life right here on Earth.
