The Hebrew University alumni community mourns the passing of Prof. Ada Yonath, Nobel laureate in Chemistry and distinguished HU alumna.

Prof. Yonath’s groundbreaking achievements and lifelong commitment to scientific discovery leave an extraordinary legacy and a lasting source of pride for Hebrew University alumni around the world.

May her memory be a blessing.

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem mourns the passing of Prof. Ada Yonath, Nobel laureate in Chemistry and esteemed alumna.

Born in Jerusalem, Prof. Yonath began her distinguished academic journey at the Hebrew University, earning her bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1962 and her master’s degree in biochemistry in 1964 before continuing on to her doctoral studies at the Weizmann Institute of Science.

As the first Israeli woman to win a Nobel Prize, Prof. Yonath’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of students and researchers around the world to ask bold questions and pursue discovery without compromise.

We extend our deepest condolences to her family, her colleagues, and the scientific community.

May her memory be a blessing.

New research involving Hebrew University scholars examines Assuta Ashdod Hospital’s response during the attacks and offers practical insights for civilian healthcare systems facing extreme emergencies.

The unprecedented events of October 7 pushed civilian healthcare systems far beyond standard emergency protocols, exposing critical gaps in hospital communication, staffing, and logistics during active conflict.

A new study examining Assuta Ashdod Hospital’s response during the October 7 attacks provides vital insights into how civilian facilities operate under sustained rocket fire. The findings offer practical lessons for healthcare systems worldwide as governments reevaluate medical preparedness for modern, high-intensity warfare.

The research was led by Maximilian Nerlander (Linköping University and visiting scholar at HUJI's School of Public Health), alongside Prof. Adam Rose (HUJI School of Public Health) and Dr. Debra West (Assuta Ashdod Medical Center).

When a city holds over 3,000 years of history, breaking into the global top 10 for culture and history feels almost natural.

According to the new Yanolja Attractiveness Index, developed in collaboration with researchers from Purdue University and Kyung Hee University, Jerusalem placed in the top 50 overall tourism cities worldwide, while ranking 10th in the Culture and History category. The index analyzed global social big data across 14 languages to evaluate how travelers experience and discuss iconic destinations.

From Hebrew University to advancing public health in Cameroon. 🌍

We’re proud to recognize Njweng Nde Fon, a Hebrew University alumna whose dedication to medicine and public health is helping improve healthcare access and empower communities.

After earning her International Master’s of Public Health from Hebrew University in 2024, Njweng has continued to apply her knowledge through healthcare, research, education, and disease prevention initiatives.

Her journey is a powerful example of how Hebrew University alumni are making a difference around the world.

This month, we're proud to feature Njweng Nde Fon, a Hebrew University alumna whose career reflects a deep commitment to advancing public health and improving healthcare access for communities around the world.

Since earning her International Master's of Public Health from the Braun School of Public Health & Community Medicine in 2024, Njweng has continued to expand her expertise in global health. She currently serves as a Doctor of Medicine at Solidarity Hospital in Buea, Cameroon, while leading impactful public health initiatives focused on disease prevention, health education, and community empowerment.

Inspired by her experience at Hebrew University, Njweng continues to advance public health through research, education, and community engagement.

This summer, a group of ambitious American high school students stepped inside the Edmond J. Safra and Ein Kerem campuses to conduct hands-on research alongside top HUJI scientists in genetics, cancer biology, and immunology.

Offered through a collaboration between the Hebrew University International Office, the Hebrew University Youth Division, and NCSY Next Step Israel Internships, this unique program gave aspiring young researchers direct exposure to cutting-edge discovery.

A collaborative scientific solution. 🌾

🌾 Israeli and Palestinian researchers have spent the past five years working together to develop new wheat varieties capable of withstanding extreme heat and drought across the Middle East.

The joint initiative produced "Ufuq" (Arabic for horizon), a climate-resilient wheat line engineered to thrive in shorter, drier growing seasons, securing future food supplies in an increasingly harsh climate.

The project was led by Prof. Zvi Peleg from Hebrew University’s Faculty of Agriculture alongside his colleague, Prof. Ziad Abdeen from the Al-Quds Public Health Society, with support from Wageningen University and funding from the Dutch Friends of Hebrew University.
