Join us tomorrow for a special virtual gathering celebrating our school's rich legacy and inspiring roots in one of New York City's most iconic neighborhoods.
Event: "Elisabeth Irwin & Greenwich Village" with LREI History Teacher Ann Carroll
Date: May 28, 2025
Time: 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. EST
Location: Zoom
Join LREI history teacher Ann Carroll for a presentation exploring LREI founder Elisabeth Irwin's rich life in the vibrant and dynamic political and artistic scene of Greenwich Village in the early 20th century. From Irwin’s arrival in the neighborhood in 1903 until her death in 1942, she crossed paths, shared tables, and fought battles with some of the most extraordinary men and women in American history. From ACLU founder Crystal Eastman, to the first woman elected to Congress Jeannette Rankin; labor advocate Frances Perkins, to educational pioneer John Dewey — among others — this conversation will explore the ways in which Elisabeth Irwin’s story is woven into the greater fabric of the history of the Village, New York and the nation. Whether you’re a longtime alum or recently graduated, this is a chance to reconnect, reflect, and learn about our school's remarkable founder.
