FEED THE CREATIVITY!

Programming is about to begin at the Red Hook Art Project, and we know one thing for sure:

Kids can’t create, learn, and focus when they’re hungry.

Our students often come straight from a long day at school ready to paint, draw, make music, do homework, and spend time in a safe, creative space.

And yes… they’re HUNGRY!

That’s why we’re calling on our community to support our RHAP After-School Meal Initiative Feed the Creativity!

And listen… it doesn’t have to be fancy. We just need to feed our babies.

👩🏾‍🍳 Love to cook? Make a hot meal.
🥪 Not much of a cook? Make some sandwiches.
🍕 Own a restaurant or local business? Sponsor a meal for the day.
💛 Just want to help? Pick a day and provide what you can.

Meals can be simple: PB&J, turkey & cheese, ham & cheese, pasta, tacos, burgers, hot dogs, chicken tenders, pizza, or your favorite kid-friendly meal.

📅 Programming: Tuesday–Thursday
⏰ 3:00–7:00 PM

Our staff is on-site beginning at 11:00 AM, so earlier drop-offs can be coordinated too.

You don’t have to teach an art class to make an impact. Sometimes showing up for a young person simply means making sure that after a long day at school, they walk into their community art studio and something good is waiting for them to eat.

We want our students to know that their community sees them, cares about them, and is invested in them.

So we’re calling on our neighbors, parents, grandparents, home cooks, chefs, restaurants, local businesses, community partners, and friends of RHAP:

Pick a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
Make a meal.
Make some sandwiches.
Sponsor some food.
FEED OUR BABIES.

One Year Later: Remembering the Red Hook Fire

It’s hard to believe that it has been a year since the devastating fire here in Red Hook that impacted so many of our artists, creatives, small businesses, and neighbors.

A few weeks after the fire, members of the RHAP team were given the opportunity to go inside and help recover whatever could still be saved. We suited up, put on our masks and protective gear, and walked into spaces that once held artwork, businesses, dreams, memories, and years of hard work.

We went in hoping to save what we could not just materials and artwork, but pieces of people's stories.

Our hearts continue to go out to every artist, business owner, worker, and community member who lost something that day. We know that rebuilding doesn't happen overnight. A year later, some people are still rebuilding, recovering, and figuring out what comes next.

This photo reminds us of something we already know about Red Hook when our community is hurting, we show up for one another.

We are grateful that RHAP could play even a small part in the recovery efforts, and we continue to stand with our creative community.

Red Hook is more than buildings and businesses. It's people. It's artists. It's neighbors. It's family.

We remember. We honor. We continue to rebuild together.

We’re excited to share a recap from one of the highlights of our summer programming at Red Hook Art Project: our Paint the City initiative in partnership with Chainlink Productions.

Throughout the summer, our young artists had the opportunity to meet and learn directly from multiple New York City street artists, introducing them to different forms of street art, creative expression, and the culture behind the work.

Students were able to explore a variety of hands-on projects, including designing and painting their own skateboard decks, creating their own street-art tag names, and experimenting with spray paint and other materials.

One of the most exciting projects allowed students to completely reimagine action figures. They took figures apart, mixed and matched different elements, reconstructed them into original characters, painted and spray-painted their creations, and placed the finished pieces inside clear display cases. These works will become part of an exhibition later this year, giving our young artists another opportunity to see their creativity celebrated and shared with the larger community.

What made Paint the City special was that students weren't just learning an art technique they were being encouraged to experiment, take creative risks, develop their own artistic identities, and understand that art can exist far beyond a traditional canvas.

We are incredibly thankful to Chainlink Productions and all of the participating artists who shared their time, talent, and creativity with our students. It was a fun and meaningful summer experience, and we look forward to continuing this partnership and creating even more opportunities for our young artists.

LIGHTS. CAMERA. ANIMATE!

This fall, the Red Hook Art Project x Pioneer Works are bringing something NEW to our middle school artists ANIMATION 101: The Healthy Relationships Animation Project!

From October through January, students will step into the world of animation while exploring what healthy relationships really look like friendship, communication, boundaries, respect, trust, kindness, and supporting one another.

Our young artists will have the opportunity to create characters, develop stories, storyboard their ideas, experiment with animation, and bring their own original stories to life!

And because this is RHAP, we're not just teaching art skills. We're creating space for young people to use their voices, express their ideas, build confidence, and have meaningful conversations through ART.

We are so excited to launch this new creative journey with our friends at Pioneer Works and our incredible middle school artists.

Since 2013, Pioneer Works has hosted Second Sundays, a free monthly open house featuring live music, experiments, and workshops that activate our campus in partnership with artists-in-residence and community-based organizations in NYC. Visit our website for more programming information.

From Access to Opportunity.

At Red Hook Art Project, we don't simply provide art classes we build pathways.
A young person can enter RHAP at age 7, discover their creative voice, build skills and confidence, receive mentorship, exhibit their work, become an Emerging Artist, gain paid work experience, and grow into a creative professional, teaching artist, mentor, or community leader.

At the heart of it all is what makes RHAP different relationships before programs. We are building a long-term ecosystem of opportunity around young people and their families.

Our Values Are More Than Words on a Wall.

At Red Hook Art Project, our Core Values and Theory of Change guide how we teach, mentor, create, and build community. We want every young person who walks through our doors to know that their creativity matters, their voice matters, and they have the power to create change.

Our values creativity, dedication, patience, kindness, self-awareness, honest communication, collaboration, social change, and celebrating diversity help young people develop skills that extend far beyond the art studio.

Our Theory of Change starts with meeting young people exactly where they are. Through art, mentorship, resources, knowledge, and opportunities to lead, we help them build confidence and creative power that can ultimately contribute to social change and justice.

For nonprofits serving young people, having clear values and a Theory of Change is important because young people deserve more than programs they deserve intentional spaces built around trust, belonging, accountability, possibility, and purpose.

At RHAP, we don't just ask young people to make art. We give them space to discover who they are and imagine what they can change.

A Bittersweet End to an Amazing Summer!

Today is bittersweet as we celebrate the last day of summer camp for our younger Emerging Artists!

We want to send a HUGE thank you to Chain Link Productions for an incredible four-week run of our Paint the City Initiative. Over the past few weeks, our students had the opportunity to collaborate, learn, and create alongside some amazing street artists from across New York City.

They explored new techniques, experimented with different materials, and most importantly, were given the freedom to let their creativity lead the way.

For their final day, we kept it simple: paper, color, scissors, shapes, and imagination. Students were encouraged to create whatever they were feeling in the moment and watching those ideas transform into finished pieces was truly amazing.

Summer may be coming to an end, but the creativity doesn’t stop here. We’re so proud of everything our young artists created, explored, and discovered this summer.

Seeing the world through her own lens.

There is something powerful about watching a young artist discover what makes her feel alive creatively. Give her a camera, surround her with art, and suddenly the world becomes something worth documenting.

Photography isn’t just about taking a picture it’s about noticing. Noticing people. Noticing color. Noticing stories, emotions, and moments that others might walk right past.

We love creating spaces where young people can explore their passions, experiment without fear, and understand that their perspective matters. Whether she’s behind the camera or surrounded by artwork, you can see the curiosity, compassion, and confidence growing.

Keep looking. Keep creating. Keep capturing the world exactly as you see it.

Because at the Red Hook Art Project, we believe ART SAVES LIVES and every young artist deserves the opportunity to find their lens.
