A lith print is a silver gelatin print that has been over-exposed and partially developed in a highly diluted lith developer. The prints achieved with this process have unique tones and illustrative effects. Lith prints may display delicate warm-toned highlights and mid-tones and cool, gritty, and harsh shadows.⁠

In this two-day workshop with Brittonie Fletcher (), participants will learn to develop black-and-white darkroom prints with lith chemistry. Through demonstrations, experimentation, and hands-on learning, students will learn to read the “infectious development” cues in order to control the results of their prints, covering both first and second-pass lith printing. Participants will come away with a range of exploratory prints using the process and a good foundation for future personal work.⁠

Join Richard Renaldi (Richard Renaldi) for a hands-on workshop making 8x10 portraits in the field, a unique opportunity for large format photographers to learn from and make portraits alongside an accomplished artist in the field, while gaining skills they can apply in their practice moving forward.

Designed for photographers with prior view camera experience, this two-day workshop invites participants to refine their approach to portraiture through lecture, demonstrations, hands-on practice, and direct feedback.
On the first day, Renaldi will give a presentation on his work and approach, followed by a demonstration that covers loading 8x10 film in the darkroom and making a portrait in the studio. Topics include approaching and directing subjects, composing engaging portraits, and intentional use of perspective and lighting. The class will then head out into the city to make 8x10 portraits of passersby and each other. The next week, the group will review and critique their photographs before returning to the field to refine their approach based on feedback.

Whether you have an idea for a project that is intended for the book form or are already working on one, this intensive and comprehensive program is designed to guide you through every step of the process of making a photobook. The objective is to have a physical maquette or artist book ready to present to publishers or to self-publish upon completion of the course, as well as to establish a practice and community to support them going forward.⁠

The 2026 Penumbra Foundation Members Gallery is now open for submissions!

We are delighted to welcome guest juror , photographer and the Assistant Photo Editor at the The New Yorker.

Three members are selected to have their work featured in an online gallery on our website and social media, receiving exposure and recognition within our international community of artists, photo world professionals, and photography lovers. Selected artists also receive an additional year-long Professional Penumbra Membership.

Any Penumbra member—Individual, Student, Educator, Professional, Pro Studio, & Patron—can submit their work to our Online Members Gallery.

Discounted membership is available for those who are not currently members, but would like to join in order to apply for the Members Gallery. Please email [email protected] to inquire.

Over 4 weeks, explore a range of salt and silver-based printing processes with Morgan Post (Morgan Post).

During Intro to Alt Process: Salt and Silver, students will learn salt printing, albumen, and collodio-chloride.

Through demonstrations and hands-on practice, students gain experience mixing chemistry, coating substrates, exposing, and processing prints. Each week, students will bring digital files created with any device to be printed as digital negatives and translated into each process.

✶ Strobe for Wet Plate *Registration closes this Friday!
Saturday & Sunday, August 29 & 30 | 10am-6pm

The ISO of wet plate collodion is less than 1, necessitating exposures that last for multiple seconds in order to yield a proper image. With the advent of modern strobe-based lighting, exposures can now be made instantaneously, opening a new range of creative possibilities. Our two-day Strobe for Wet Plate workshop gives wet plate practitioners the skills and information necessary to utilize strobe lighting in their practice. Students will also learn about options on the new and used market for strobes and light modifiers suitable for the process that are powerful yet economical.

Monday, September 28 | 10am-6pm

Our Wet Plate Practice Day is designed for students with previous wet plate experience who are looking for more practice in a classroom setting. Throughout the day, Sam will be on hand to assist with pouring methods, dialing in exposure times, and answering any outstanding questions about the process.

Saturday & Sunday, November 14 & 15 | 10am-6pm

After attending an intro wet plate course, participants are often eager to try working with larger plates. This workshop provides the opportunity to make tintypes in the 8x10 size, while advancing one’s collodion technique and skill set.

All necessary materials, including cameras, lighting, chemistry, and plates, are provided.

Ocean of Images, Map of Maps with Caleb Stein (Caleb Stein) is a 5- week course that takes the abundance of images in the world as a condition to work with, considering how images relate to systems, how style carries histories and hierarchies, and why a question can be more generative than an idea.

Through a combination of lecture and discussion, the course focuses on ideas like fact and fiction in photography, the potential of low-res imagery, questions of the archive, and labor and its relation to image-making. This course is great for anyone interested in building a framework of questions for their own conceptual projects–whether that be in photography, writing, film, installation, or book form.

Open to photographers, artists, and writers at all levels; no technical prerequisites.
