Team 1- Yuhsg Our team is taking part in the New York City DNA Barcoding Competition New York City is a cultural melting pot.

Cultures around the world use lemons for household, medicinal and culinary purposes. In our experiment, we hope to verify the genetic similarities and differences of lemons from different cultivars, specifically from Israel, Greece, and Morocco. Once these results are found we hope to compare and contrast our results with those of a parallel experiment about citrons, which is being conducted by our peers. Our team is made up of observant Jews and the citron plays a key role in our religious lives. In the fall Jews all around the world celebrate the 7 day holiday of Succot (The Feast of Tabernacles). Jewish tradition prohibits the use of lemons in place of citrons and we, as observant Jews, want to understand the differences between these species. The Urban Barcoding project gives us the opportunity to investigate this using current advanced technology.
