This past Thursday, April 23, we proudly celebrated the Fourth Engineering Program Alumni Reunion, an inspiring evening honoring the innovation, passion, and professional excellence of our distinguished Engineering alumni cohort.
The event brought together CUNY Hostos Community College Engineering alumni, along with faculty, students, and staff, for an evening centered on connection, recognition, and community. The reunion highlighted the strength of the Engineering Program and the continued engagement of alumni who remain closely connected to Hostos.
A special highlight of the evening was the recognition of Ligan Oluwafemi, PhD as our special honoree. Dr. Oluwafemi was recognized for excellence in higher education in the field of engineering and for earning a doctoral degree in engineering. This distinction reflects a significant academic achievement and serves as an inspiring example of perseverance, scholarship, and professional growth for current and future Hostos students.
Thank you to our Engineering alumni for joining us, and to our Hostos faculty, students, and staff for helping make this reunion a meaningful celebration of achievement, excellence, and community within the Engineering Program.

Earlier this month, on April 15, 2026, we hosted a powerful virtual conversation spotlighting the real impact of Spanish fluency in criminal justice professions. The program was a tremendous success and reaffirmed how bilingualism is not simply an added skill, but an essential tool for advocacy, trust building, and meaningful community engagement.
A special thank you to Hostos alumna Denise Herrera â18, Immigration Defense Social Worker at The Bronx Defenders, for serving as our featured speaker. Denise shared thoughtful, realâworld insights on how Spanish and English bilingualism strengthens her daily work with clients and colleagues. Her perspective enriched the conversation for attendees who are preparing to enter the criminal justice field and are eager to understand how language access directly affects justice, dignity, and outcomes.
We are grateful for the continued partnership with John Jay College (CUNY) of Criminal Justice. Thank you to Rosann Santos, CPC, Cristina Lozano ArgĂźelles, Ph.D., and Rosemary Barberet, for their collaboration and commitment in making this event such a success.
Thank you as well to Professor Sarah Hoiland from CUNY Hostos Community College for her collaboration and support throughout this initiative.
This conversation underscored the importance of bilingual education and the value of creating spaces where students can learn directly from professionals whose experiences reflect the communities they serve. We look forward to continuing this important dialogue.
