Gloria helped propel the feminist movement forward by exposing inequalities and spurring conversations about women, power, race, class, work, and love. An alumna of a Seven Sisters college, she deeply understood the power of women’s education and what is possible when women are given the space to take themselves and their ideas seriously.

This fall, Pulitzer-winning Irish poet, Paul Muldoon, will teach a course on sonnets at Barnard.

The course will introduce students to the art of the sonnet, studying the likes of Elinor Wylie and Terrance Hayes, while enjoying guest appearances from contemporary sonneteers.

“The word I use for working with undergraduate students for me, is ‘blessing,’” said Muldoon. “It's a blessing to be able to be part of the development of a writer.”

The course will culminate in a student poetry reading at Book Culture at 2915 Broadway.

“I’m looking forward to helping make Barnard a destination for creative writing,” said Muldoon.

In September, Makeda Best ’97 will join MoMA The Museum of Modern Art as the next Joel and Anne Ehrenkranz Chief Curator of Photography, overseeing a world-class collection of over 30,000 works.

On July 29, nearly 300 students presented their summer research findings at the twelfth annual Lida Orzeck ’68 Poster Session, marking a celebratory end to Barnard’s Summer Research Institute (SRI).

SRI provides funding, access to subsidized housing, and supportive programming for students, made possible by numerous individual donors, foundations, government grants, and other philanthropic contributors.

The poster session was sponsored by Barnard’s own Lida Orzeck, co-founder and former CEO of Hanky Panky.

“Lida has played a critical role in our students' education and in your lives as an alumna, as a trustee of the college, and as a donor,” said President Laura Rosenbury during her remarks.

Students stood tall beside their posters, presenting their months-long research at sites such as the New York Botanical Garden, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the American Museum of Natural History, and even the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This spring, student archer Alena Lipscomb ’28 became a national champion — the third in program history.

Lipscomb captured the Recurve College Women’s National Championship at the 2026 Hotel Planner USA Archery Collegiate Target Nationals, earning Columbia’s first individual outdoor national title since 2017.

“When I found out that I was the third archer in program history that won the title, I was so grateful that I never gave up on the long training hours this past year,” said Lipscomb.

✨ Student Spotlight! ✨

Congratulations to Barnard College student Charlie Bloomer ’29 on completing the prestigious VOICES fellowship through the Asian American Journalists Association!

As the youngest member of her cohort, Bloomer worked alongside top newsroom mentors to produce deep local reporting. Her story centers on the Chinese American community in Portland, investigating the aftermath and reconciliation movement following the demolition of a historic cemetery.

To top off her fellowship, Bloomer presented her work to seasoned reporters at the AAJA convention in Minneapolis and was selected as one of only four fellows to receive a scholarship from FOX.
