Doing some evidence based reading on vocabulary. Here are some thoughts from tonight:
" in order to affect comprehension, instruction may need to go beyond simply getting students to associate words with their definitions." Beck, et al, 2008.

- readers need to actively work with new words by connecting them to words they already know.
- high number of encounters with words facilitates success on multiple choice tests and comprehension; however, quality instruction with active processing makes a bigger difference in comprehension, according to research .

As SLP's we may know this very well, but I don't Always see active vocabulary instruction in the classroom. How is it where you work? Have you made any suggestions regarding teaching vocabulary to your schools ?

Despite not being active for over a year, I managed to get some 'LIKES' and bring up my following from 300 or so to 500! As a result, I decided I will try to start this up again and share some good Language tools with you!!

looking for some good articles on any form of language ( syntax, semantics) treatment for school age children with language disorders.

same goes for Ch/Sh differentiation: I tap the table for ch - to show the plosive element, and slide for shh. the motions helped differentiate the two sounds in the student's productions . ( he couldn't discriminate the 2 sounds).

Never underestimate the power of visual and kinesthetic cues, especially when students are learning the phonetic principles! Today, my student was forever inserting a /f/ after a m, as in smfoke, for smoke, since he typically would produce smoke as foke ( we were working on s clusters). To facilitate the proper production and elimination of /f/, we ran up to the letters on his wall in class and ran from 's', to 'm', to 'o' to 'k'. and put a big X over the f. we did it over and over while articulating each sound, and then he got it!!

simple tip to make drill work bearable: when playing any game with multiple pieces ( i.e., food for the hungry hippo), have the student earn each food by saying the words, prior to playing the game!
