The best way to sing more, is to sing more!
If you've been wanting to improve your singing, get more daring and confident, and improve your voice under pressure, then this is YOUR challenge.
You don't have to make a lofty goal, it can be simple... Here are some ways you can be brave with your voice.:
-Go to karaoke with your friends
-Make a plan to go to a local open mic
-Ask a musician you know if they'd want to come over and play some music with you
-Ask your friends/partner/kids if you can sing a song for them
-Sign up to audition for something (musical theatre, national anthem, a tv show)

You don't have to DO the thing before February 1st, just make the plan. And have that plan involve other people, so you can't "chicken" out. It's ok to be afraid, as long as you do it anyway. ;)

What a weird thing to do, right? Try no words... just something closer to "a" like "apple" or "eh" like "help". Then try adding the words, but keep your tongue out.

So, if this works well for you... what does it mean? That your tongue is a problem? That all of your tension can be blamed on your poor tongue?

Nope! The tongue is a big ol' muscle that starts at the top of your larynx (near your vocal cords/folds). It is literally and figuratively connected to a lot of other things that have to do with singing. Perhaps this exercise helps because you need to open your jaw more... Perhaps you tend to press your tongue back and down when you sing. Maybe you were in choir for a long time and tend to have a low larynx or a breathy sound much of the time, and this stops that a little bit.

Now what? Try putting your tongue back in your mouth, with the tip of it resting on the back of your bottom teeth, and pretend you still have it stuck out. (So, maybe it feels like the back of your tongue is still up and "forward"). You may notice, if you watch carefully, that many of your favorite "belty" or "strong" singers, sing this way. It can be a great tool and exercise to prevent tension.

Give yourself a few minutes to work on something that you care about, even if it’s ONLY a few minutes. Any purposeful singing is practice. And if you’ve been wanting to do something that’s just for you… singing is perfect! Steal away that time in the car, in your room, wherever you can be by yourself, and enjoy your time. Keep singing! ❤️

I often have people ask me if they should only stick to certain vocal ranges, or if their voices might be too low to sing certain songs. Good news!!! Unless you’re trying to be a classical/opera singer… you are completely free to explore without worrying about “voice type”! Set goals and a way to accomplish those goals. It’s important to listen to your body. Is it just different/difficult, or is it flat out uncomfortable? Get a great teacher to help you make a plan for YOUR vocal goals. ❤️

Looking to start now? We are offering packages like this one to start your new year off right! But you don’t have to wait til January, you can start now. 😀😀😀

Kenneth Bozeman | Vocal Pedagogy 11/04/2021

I hope you take a look at this wonderful article. Kenneth Bozeman is truly remarkable. I have taken a couple of classes/workshops with him. What a force of knowledge and communication of that knowledge, with humility and gentleness. What I have learned from his writings and lectures cannot be summed up in a post. I am also grateful that he suggested we check out an incredible pedagogue of the "past", William Vennard. I am so inspired, and am looking forward to having you all read that article soon as well. Thank you, Kenneth Bozeman.

Listen to your own voice more. ❤
Practice doesn't always have to be a HUGE ordeal. Singing along to an instrumental track (instead of only hearing yourself with the original singer) is great practice. You can make a playlist of karaoke tracks on YouTube, Spotify or Apple Music and sing along in the car, or when you have some alone time at home.
