Habari ya Mchana/News of Afternoon

Swahili lessons

*Sometimes the literal translations help a lot*

The word *habari* means literally “news” .

So when you say *habari ya leo* it’s literally

“What is the news of today ? “ where “leo” is today.

In Swahili culture, it’s common to ask about the news of various things as greetings.

Habari *ya asubuhi?*. —
“What is the news of the morning” ?

Habari *ya machana?*. —
“What is the news of the afternoon” ?

Habari *ya jioni?*. —
“What is the news of the evening” ?

Habari *ya leo?*. —
“What is the news of the day” ?

Habari *ya kazi?*. —
“What is the news of the your work” ?

Etc. etc. etc. …..

Another name of
Habari ?

Which is like saying “what’s up “ ? Or “Hi” , but translation is you’re just asking “ News ? “

It’s similar in Kinyarwanda, another Bantu language, the word “Amakuru ? “ means
“News ? “ But it’s really used to ask “how are you ? “
