The Writing Center is located in Sage Hall Room 100.
The Writing Center offers personal attention from expert and professionally trained tutors who are available to assist students with all writing assignments at all levels.

OVER 75,000 TUTORING SESSIONS SINCE 2012!

We offer support for writing in all subjects: English, ESL, Education, Geography, Health, History, Art and Music History, Psychology, Sociology, all Sciences.

Students may come at any stage of any writing assignment, including the research paper. Often, just getting started on an assignment is a challenge. Tutors will assist.

We encourage students to plan to come for multiple sessions during the process of drafting and writing any paper.

The Writing Center approach is to guide, instruct and empower by collaborating, engaging in discussion about the papers' ideas and development, and eliciting responses through the Socratic Method (the professionally accepted tutoring methodology). Sentence level problems are addressed through scaffolding, modeling, and guided practice using supplemental materials.

It is our goal that students leave each session having learned something about writing.

PROOF READING POLICY: The tutors will suggest ways the student can identify patterns of errors, and using instructional materials, teach the student error correction.

For answers to any questions or if faculty wish to schedule a tour or traveling workshop, please don't hesitate to contact the Writing Center.

Give to Writing Center Fund | #CUNYTUESDAY 2025 12/02/2025

Good afternoon,

Thank you all for your support of our Writing Center. We are truly appreciative of the faculty's trust in the quality of the support offered by the Writing Center and for continuing to refer students or schedule classes in our lab. Thank you again and again!

Our deep gratitude has gone out to the family of Paul Luftig former volunteer tutor ( for 20 years!), who created a fund in his name.

Many students with F1 status do not have access to the TAP or Pell grants. The Writing Center has established a scholarship in the name of Paul Luftig. This year we are including the name of Elizabeth Olana, our former colleague, who loved our students.

We would like to acknowledge those students who regularly use our Writing Center and who are also in financial need.

Our Writing Center fund has also provided stipends for those who don't qualify for Academic Affairs or Perkins funding.

Our Writing Center fund also supports staff development, crucial to the quality of support needed to help our students pass their classes and stay in school.

We have been able to purchase books for staff development

and filled in the gaps not covered by OAA or Auxiliary by paying the registration for tutors to attend national conferences in Columbus, Ohio; Vancouver, BC; and Cincinnati, Ohio, conferences which are essential to tutor education. They attend sessions, present their own work and network with peers and professionals from across the country and Europe. Another result is the visibility of our BCC Writing Center on the national level; for example, our tutor/ CLT Jarrett Taylor has been the National Peer Tutor Representative for the IWCA twice, representing all peer tutors from all colleges and universities nationwide.

The funds have also provided additional support, adding on to the funding provided by OAA, to our BCC Tutors' Alliance Conference, which provides a unifying event for all tutors CUNY-wide.

This year in addition, we would like to offer a stipend to another volunteer tutor, whose services are proving invaluable.

Here is the link to our Giving Tuesday.

Any amount,no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated and helpful for our students and the services the Writing Center offers.

Thank you in advance.

Jan Robertson, Director
