Dear Chess Parent,
A couple of weeks ago, as I was pondering new directions for Start Right Chess online classes, I received a text from Marcella Fuller, reporting that Khiem—one of our first online students—had just won his first several games in a well-known public parks tournament in Los Angeles. Go, Khiem! I cheered. (He finished 6/8.)
A few hours later, I received a text from Dr. Robby, reporting that her son Xander had just taken third place in a large scholastic tournament in Las Vegas. (Xander was also one of our first ten or so online students.) Way to go, Xander! I cheered again.
Just as I was reflecting on the close timing of these communications, I received a text from Jisun Yoon, reporting that Liam* had just finished CLEAR FIRST in a field of 22 in a rated scholastic event in Fairfield, CT! Bravo, Liam! I exulted. Hmm. Is the Start Right Chess approach getting validated? I wondered.
A moment later, in seeming answer to my question, I was informed that Jared Froom had taken CLEAR FIRST in his 57-PLAYER SECTION at the vaunted Tristate Championships in Bryant Park! OMG!
Help me give a shout out to these hard-working, courageous kids and our amazing FM Coach Holly, who coaches both Liam and Jared. Indeed, as Coach Holly's Thursday class is filling up, starting this week we will add a FRIDAY 7:00 PM ET CLASS to her lineup. This 75-minute class—(ALL of our classes are officially set for 75 minutes now)—will feature analysis of student slow games from the previous week, lessons in calculation, strategic planning, and optional homework.
