Yesterday, our Executive Director, Tara Gardner, spoke at the Fund for the City of New York’s True Cost of Living Report Briefing, where a critical truth was highlighted: 46% of NYC households cannot afford basic necessities.

Meet Rachel Cabrera, Director of Jackson Heights Early Learning Center in Corona, Queens
What started as a part-time job at 18 became her lifelong passion. Today, her center provides high-quality, compassionate care to ensure stronger support and better supervision.

As a proud Latina leader, Rachel focuses on empowering families and educators—helping parents navigate enrollment, access resources, and feel supported every step of the way.

Meet Heaven’s Tiny Tots, a Harlem-based child care program founded by Tamika Silva.

What began as a home-based program has grown into multiple DOE-contracted sites, making Tamika one of the first African American women in New York City to achieve this milestone.

A passionate advocate, Tamika helped advance the SMOKEOUT Act, protecting children by limiting smoke shops near schools and child care centers.

As proud members of the Day Care Council of New York, Heaven’s Tiny Tots values the Council’s advocacy, legal guidance, and professional development that help centers thrive.
