Yesterday at the Everyone Reading Conference at the CUNY Graduate Center, Shefa Center faculty presented two interactive workshops focused on reading comprehension.

We explored practical, research-based strategies to strengthen both fiction and nonfiction comprehension. Participants learned how to teach fiction annotation using key words and phrases, guide students to focus on plot, character, and vocabulary, and support them in turning notes into clear, thoughtful summaries.

We also dove into nonfiction reading—teaching inferential reasoning with Notice and Note nonfiction signposts and integrating SRSD writing strategies to enhance comprehension, summarization, and synthesis across content areas.

Educators walked away with classroom-ready tools that build confidence, deepen comprehension, and foster independence—empowering all learners to unlock meaning from complex texts.

What an inspiring night at Hillel Yeshiva! Nearly 150 parents came out for “The Courage to Set Limits,” with our Dr. Yoni Schwab, staying until 10pm with meaningful questions and honest conversations! 💚💙
