New research published in Scientific Reports sheds light on the unequal toll of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City.
The article, “Deep disadvantage in mortality on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic,” co-authored by Frank W. Heiland, Jennifer Brite, and Deborah Balk, examines mortality patterns among some of NYC’s most vulnerable populations using Hart Island burial records.
Findings reveal stark spatial and socioeconomic disparities in pandemic-related excess mortality, underscoring how COVID-19 magnified existing inequalities across the city.

Marxe Student Spotlight: Isabel Torres
BSPA '27 | 2025–27 Obama-Chesky Voyager Scholar
For Isabel Torres, public service is about creating opportunities that empower others to succeed. As a 2025–27 Obama-Chesky Voyager Scholar, she is preparing for a self-designed Summer Voyage to Mexico City, Copenhagen, and Casablanca, where she will explore how governments and nonprofit organizations support students' post-secondary success through mentorship, guidance, and skill-building programs.
Since transferring to the Marxe School, Isabel has found a close-knit community that has challenged her to think critically about public policy and social impact. Through coursework, public service experiences, and meaningful mentorship, she has deepened her understanding of the systems that shape educational opportunity and community well-being.
Inspired by her volunteer work with the Women's Committee of Plumbers Union Local 1 and organizations supporting young people, Isabel is committed to building a future where more students have access to the resources, confidence, and support they need to thrive.
